What could this noise be?

My 2004 series II Auto has started making a noise that I can't identify.
It comes in at around 75 kph and I think it starts to disappear around 100 kph.
It's not terribly loud, but sounds like a continuous low kind of growl. There is no vibration associated with it.
It doesn't make the noise when the car is stopped and the engine idling or even if you rev it when stopped.
I took it to a Nissan dealer workshop and they reckoned it was "wind noise - probably from the radio antenna" What the - ?
I driven other X-Trails 9that had radio antennas!) and never heard this noise before.
Any ideas guys?

Re: What could this noise be?

It would help if you could tell us where you think the noise is coming from emoticon

A wild guess it could be the muffler (which is a known problem to nissan) and you can only hear that growl at cenrtain speeds.

It comes from the middle of the car, just under you, but it is in fact a faulty muffler.

This is just a guess if I compare it to the sounds/nioses I was getting before the dealer replaced my muffler.

There is an existing thread about it in the Q&A section of the forum.

Re: What could this noise be?

It seems to be coming from around the middle of the car but i cant be sure.
I haven't heard it on other X-Trails I've driven, so it cant be a normal muffler sound if its the muffler.
Is there a certain approx number of Ks on the speedo when the muffler begins to develop this fault?
Also, could it be diff or transmission noise?

The muffler problem seems to develop around the 40,000kms mark (but only on some xtrails and not all).

Re: What could this noise be?

Hmmmm ... my X-Trail has just turned over 41,000 km.
I guess this is more a nuisance than a serious fault. Is it covered by the orginal warranty though?

Re: What could this noise be?

Johnstone,

I would question if it's a changed sound in the exhaust - if this is the case, then it would imply that either the standard muffler/exhaust has rusted somewhere enough for holes to be present, thus changing the exhaust note. Other causes could be aging of the resonators along the exhaust pipe (I've never known one to "wear out") however catalytic converters do "wear out" but there are usually other tell-tale signs (sounds) of this occurring, by rattling noises etc.

You could get under the car and hit the exhaust pipe in various locations (when it's cold of course) and see if there's any noticeable rattle from certain sections. This may indicate the above worn out resonators/catalytic converter(s). Keep in mind that one catalytic converter is right near the engine (in front of it) and I think it would be difficult to access this one (although it's likely to be the first one to disintegrate, but 40,000k's seems awfully low age for this to happen, however varying factors affect the age of them).

Thanks for the reply Basshead.

Do you think the noise could be anything else ... diff, transmission, tyres?

Yes, if it is a corroded muffler, then nissan would replace it under warranty and free of charge. In fact if your dealer has stock they will replace it while you wait.

My dealer confirmed a faulty design of the muffler and it seems they're getting more of these after the 40K mark.

You wouldn't see any holes or anything like that, but the rattle inside the muffler was causing the growl to take place (in my case) and I actually thought it was a loose heat shield, because the sound was coming from the centre of the car and not the rear, but it was actually the muffler and that growl was traveling through the exhaust pipe.

Again, this is just a guess and you could have something completely different.

Re: What could this noise be?

Jalal,

I don't get the growl if I'm stopped and I just rev the engine.
I only get it when the car is actually moving.
Wouldn't this indicate that it wasn't the muffler?

I didn't get the noise when I was stopped either. I used to get it when moving and even more noticeable during gear changes.

I could hear the noise inside the cabin and even louder when the windows were closed.
