As with all other threads on this forum, members are encouraged to read through before posting a question. There is little point in creating multiple new threads on the same subject, which will make finding information even harder.

Thanks for directing members to the exact location of the info. This is what our forum is all about (giving a helping hand to each other when needed) emoticon

Perhaps it might be a good idea to edit the first post in this thread (and others that have become very large) to include a brief summary of important thread page numbers (with links) to help people find particular information they're after?

I was going to post this suggestion into the "announcements" section as I thought there was already a thread there titled something like "site/forum suggestions" but I couldn't find it emoticon

Re: Forum Enhancements & Suggestions

Rich,

Thanks for the suggestion, but I don't think it’s workable, as threads move locations within the forum and so all links directing members to certain pages within a thread could be out of date or pointing to the wrong section.

Runboard has a limit of 500 "TOPICS" for each forum section we create. We're sitting at 350 "topics" so far for Main Chat and just before we reach 500 "topics" am gonna have to start moving old "topics" to an "archive" forum which I will create later for reference purposes only. This in turn means that all existing topics will change page locations, making what you have suggested un-workable.

There is no limit on the number of posts.

Having said the above Runboard's priority ONE development now is much more advanced search engine which will be able to search on content as well as subject titles, once they introduce this feature it'll make it easier for everyone. Until then, sit back, relax and do some reading and searching through pages, you'll be surprised how good the information is on nearly every page of a posted topic and you wouldn't want to miss anything! emoticon

The following forum suggestion was posted by Canada's FarEast and it has been extracted from another post

Here’s a thought for the Admin Team – might we have an “OFF TOPIC” area (like some other forums)?

Re: Forum Enhancements & Suggestions

Roger,

I have seen other forums having a "general chat" area for all sorts of discussions, but I didn't like it, as it brings up all sorts of subjects that shouldn't really appear in a 4WD forum and makes it look a bit cluttered (I mean stuff like food, movies, top of the pops is better kept in forums specifically established for that purpose) This doesn't include the interesting pics we post here of course which are still on the subject of the xtrail.

If one must discuss the above off-topic matters, then it is best taken off-line and that is why we have put the LIVE CHAT in place which will be the perfect method for off-topic discussions.

I fully realize that establishing a general section might and probably will increase the number of posts/hits on this forum, but I'm not prepared to sacrifice the quality of the forum to get more hits.

I working hard trying to keep the forum X-Trail and 4WD dedicated in terms of content and am sure you and other members will understand where am coming from.

Extract from one of Canada's FarEast posts-On the subject of going "off-topic"

Perhaps I'm getting a tad senile in my old age and don't always "understand" things the way other folks do. My "suggestion" was just that.

In any event, it's your forum, you make the rules, so carry on mate....

Feel free to delete my posts as you deem appropriate, including this one if it goes against the grain.....

Roger/Rich,

I have to agree 100% with Jalal about posts that go off-topic and I myself have also been guilty of this offence also. emoticon

I can understand it is sometimes quite difficult to talk about one subject without talking about another, but this is exactly how topics go off track, and before you know it, the end of the topic is nothing like the beginning. Topics like these can have valuable info towards the end which inevitably gets lost.

The quality of the forum speaks for itself, and am sure the main concern Jalal has is the ability of searching and finding info about a particular subject easily. Am sure most members would like to find info easily than having to search through hours of useless content which is not related to the main subject.

I take your point about having a dedicated sub-forum for "off-topic" stuff and we shall be discussing this shortly. Thanks for you understanding. emoticon

Roger, nobody is bringing the age difference matter here and we have NEVER discussed that on the forum, as I feel that to be irrelevant when we're all share the same passion and the age barrier simply disappears.

With all due respect, you got that wrong It is not MY forum. It is OUR forum and am only trying to make it an enjoyable place to stay and communicate with one another. Rules are there for a very good reason, without rules, this whole pretty community of ours will collapse and am sure you've seen that happen on "other" forums!

WE (the admin team) don't delete and/or edit post, just to show you guys the privileges we have by holding an admin account. WE do that in some cases and ALWAYS provide a reason for it. Deleting posts usually happens at a request of the person making a post or if it's of an offensive nature therefore against the forum rules. We don't have the habit of deleting posts that show disagreement with our ways of administering the forum and that is why we have created THIS thread to hear your suggestions and discuss them as we move along.

Re: Forum Enhancements & Suggestions

I think things ain't so broke there is a need to try to fix them. For mine, the current style adopted by our administrators is great. I know its easy to wander off thread, but I think we need a little leeway to do that in the main chat section - that's what chat is; suddenly in the conversation you discover something new because what you have read triggers a thought which bouncing off each other goes somewhere useful. I agree that this should be provided we are still talking about matters exxy related. We should be quick to realise when something new emerges in the chat though and re-locate it for easier access.
On the more specific sections like question and answer we should be more disciplined to stay on the thread topic, and some of our chat threads that are more specific could be moved there.

mea culpa; mea culpa; mea culpa.

Re: Forum Enhancements & Suggestions

Hi Dave,

I have no problems whatsoever in starting-up a new thread as a result of an "off=topic" question that was asked during the course of another thread discussion, provided it is directly related to the X-Trail and 4WD subjects.

Example of the above was the VERY good question asked by Vik (Vreddy) about which mode to choose and which has been merged with an existing thread discussing that subject.

Sometimes (actually nearly all of the times) the off-topic question is either already answered or covered-off as part of another existing thread.

The difficulty and limitation which I know exists in our forum is the ability to search by content to find this type of info. but that's why we (admin team) are here to help you with and until we get a better search engine with the ability to search on content, we will keep providing members with "guidance" in this regard and we do hope that members do not take offence by the "guidance" we provide.

Due to extensive involvement in this forum, I have memorised almost every thread discussion that has been posted in this forum for the past 2 years and in most cases, I can directly point members to an existing thread (if it exists) about any question that may have in terms of content. So please feel free to drop me a PM if you're trying to find something and can't find it.

Hot Topic Icons

Hi Guys,

I have now added a "hot topic" icon which will you see against some threads on the forum.

These icons will make identifying threads of importance easier and it will also be used as an indication of a high activity in that particular thread.

This icon will only be used by Admin and we will soon be updating all forum sections and assigning this icon to the topics we think are "hot" emoticon
