posticon Kirrawak State Forest

Hi all,

Thought I would report on my weekends activities that ended up taking my off-road virginity!

Most of my family live up in Taree. I haven't been off road before. Having owned the exy for 6 weeks I decided it was time. So prior to the weekend I made Mum go into town and see what four wheel driving is available in the area, having already known that there are miles of tracks that I've been horse riding on. As it turns out, there's a heck of a lot up there.

About 4km from the south most Taree exit on the Pacific Highway, there are a few entry points in the Kirrawak State Forest. There are several fire trails, with four wheel drive routes leading off them.

With parents and slightly younger brother in the car, we decided to see what we could get up to. The map we had was a little old despite being "new". But we managed to get around ok. Our first turn off was supposed to be on a fire trail that would lead us to an off-road track, but a 100 meters in we decided it was a four-wheel drive track. It was all rather exciting! Climbing and decending narrow tracks with weather worn ruts and blown down trees. A creek system runs through the area so in the wet months it could get interesting, only a couple of puddles this weekend though.

Overall it was great to get a feel for the X-Trails abilities. A few hairy moments just added to the enjoyment. I doubt I'd ever need to go anymore off-road than I did this weekend!

I shall attempt to post some pictures later this week, but they do not tend to show the extremities of the track and the slope angles are hardly apparent.

Anyway, I recommend the area, there's a bunch of trails all over the place.

For those not in the know.. Taree is approximately 3 hours north once you get on the F3. From Newcastle, another hour and a half.

If you like the beaches more.. Harrington (also in the area) has some sand dunes you can get to (I think a license is required).

Maybe a weekend event in the future? emoticon

Way to go Nathan :thumbs-up: emoticon

It certainly has a potential to become the next group meet-up in the very near future.

Look forward to see the pics of the exy in action.

Ok, got some photos organised. As I said, can't tell a lot from the pictures. It's one of those "guess you had to be there" situations.

Low range would have been nice here!

It's steeper than it looks!
