Re: GPS navigation

That's a helluva lot of GPS units in the 'to be discontinued' list, and I totally agree with you - when is a Free Lifetime Map Update not for the lifetime of the unit?
Please let us know the outcome of your contact with Garmin Aus.
I believe their newest contact number is 1800 235 822

Re: GPS navigation

Yes that's the phone number I have in my contact list so I will certainly be discussing mine and obviously your concern as well. Perhaps there are many other members out there that also have a device which is listed in the list and I would like to be able to state that there are many members of our forum that will not be happy next July if the free map updates become unavailable for them as well.

cheers

Re: GPS navigation

Often when a company states "lifetime" they don't particularly mean the life of the unit (until it dies) but rather their expected usage life of the unit until they expect many people will be upgrading to a newer unit with more features.
Unfortunate and should be spelled out in plain english at the start.

Re: GPS navigation

Today I received an email reply to my online complaint about the cessation of free map updates from 1 July 2023 for my model Garmin GPS. I haven't rang them at this time.

Their response does not add anything to what was previous stated in their email and did not answer my specific questions. I may yet ring them.

Hi David,

Thank you for contacting Garmin Australasia regarding our recent email on the discontinuation of map updates in Australia. As advised in the email, map updates will be available until July 1st 2023. Please note that your automotive navigation device will continue to function with the maps currently on the device as of July 1, 2023. Further, Garmin Australasia Product Support Team will still be available to assist with any device issues you may experience.

Garmin apologises for any inconvenience this change may cause. If you have any further questions at all then please feel free to contact us on 1800 235 822 EST (Australia), 0800 427 652 (New Zealand) 8:30am-5pm (Mon-Fri).

Re: GPS navigation

G'day guys and girls,

As they say in the classics "Better late than never" and so the latest Garmin Lifetime Free Map Updates are now available. emoticon Version 2023.20

I guess you all know the drill by now, but for those who don't;
- Download the latest Garmin Express to your PC. Version 7.14.0.0
- Plug-in your Garmin GPS and let the computer find it
- Click on the photo of your connected unit and the Updates Available screen shows
- Click on View Details and read through all the offerings (I simply go to the latest map update, as I'm not taking my Garmin on vacation to Macedonia, Iceland, or The Netherlands)
- Finally, click on the Install button and let your PC do all the work.
Done!

My update took around 3 minutes.

Re: GPS navigation

Thanks again for the timely advice...will check it out for tomorrow.
No luck with getting any satisfactory response from Garmin but after reading all I could find in the fine print about the term "Lifetime Map update" it appears that the updates can cease due to technological changes etc. So I guess I've had a good run to date with my Nuvi so will keep on using it until updates are discontinued for my model from supposedly the 1st July 2023.
After that, I will plug away until until I deem that I definitely need an updated GPS.

Cheers again

Re: GPS navigation

Well my old Garmin Nuvi 1350 is having a few issues at the moment with it cutting out regularly with a message stating that the battery is very low even though it is connected to car 12 volt output.
I suspect that the battery is just too old now to hold charge. Decision to make. Do I invest in a new Garmin considering that the Lifetime Free Map Updates will come to an end for this model Garmin (and many many more) on July 1st 2023 OR do I purchase a replacement battery and hope that it is not the device charging software at fault?
After finding that removing the battery from the GPS was relatively easy and that an after market battery for my model Garmin can be purchased on line for $13.95 with free delivery, I decided to bite the bullet and have now ordered a replacement battery.
A couple of weeks from now will tell whether the investment in the replacement battery will give me a couple more years of use (without map updates from 1 July next year) or whether I need to upgrade to a new GPS shortly.

Cheers all

Re: GPS navigation

Look on the bright side, Dave.

At least you're not being asked to pay USD$119.95 for each upgrade to an Eclipse radio/CD/GPS units' maps. emoticon

'Twas fitted by, I believe, the dealer prior to my buying our Xtrail brand new in 2013. Consequently has had only one update downloaded.

I'm with you, nothin' wrong with the old Garmin. emoticon

Cheers,
Bill

Re: GPS navigation

Well the good news is that the replacement non OEM battery I purchased arrived on Tuesday and as soon as I plugged it in the screen came alive with the GARMIN logo and started going through the map download etc. I turned it off at the switch so that I could reassemble all the bits.
What a difference the new battery has made and I have had no trouble over the last couple of days with it dropping out and disconnecting etc. although it's only around the local area and have yet to try it on a longer trip.
A good buy for $13.95 delivered and now I have at least until 1 July 2023 to avail of the regular free map updates. Decisions will be made later in 2023 whether I purchase a newer GPS. Cheers
