Some Tart T Boned My X-Trail

It's true, no good deed goes unpunished. Heading over to the Rest Home an old mate is now a resident of Wednesday a couple of weeks ago to visit him, when some crazy woman whizzed out of a servo, across 4 lanes of traffic intending to right turn. Unfortunately, there was a raised median preventing this maneuver- so now she was blocking three lanes of traffic, no problem, I'll just throw my Audi A3 into reverse and gun it back the way I'd just come, across a bike lane, and left turn lane back into the servo.... Except me and me trusty X-Trail were heading along the left turn lane- whamo two buggered doors on the drivers side.

So the X-Trail will live again, about 5K of damage and five weeks to get the bits and repair my ride. Panel Beater doing the repair is a former client and put me on a crowd that supply an equivalent vehicle and charge the rental to the at fault parties insurance company- if this happens to you check out Right2Drive You need the other parties insurance company, their claim number, and details- not be at fault and they'll get a set of wheels out to you.

So instead of the X-Trail, we have a Captiva in the driveway for the next five weeks

So the trusty X-Trail is being repaired, couple of new doors, pillar, paint and bits- off the road for five weeks. Talked to the good folk at Right2Drive, it's going to cost the other parties insurance company about $6K for the repairs, and about $8.5K for the rental on the loaner Captiva- poetic justice.

Re: Some Tart T Boned My X-Trail

Finally got my X-Trail back last week, panel shop lost a plastic spacer off the roof rail, and an airbag warning light had been flashing so they cleared that.

Owner of the business said given the damage to the drivers side of the car, the pillar that the side air bag sensor is mounted on in particular, he was really surprised the drivers side airbag didn't deploy.

He show me a picture and all round the sensor, the pillar has ripples all round it. Makes me wonder what would happen with the front ones

Keep an eye on the airbag warning light. They may have overturned the spiral cable if they had the steering disconnected and it may either be uncentred or stretched in one direction causing a fracture in the fine wires.

Make sure you test it occasionally by turning full lock-to-lock a couple of times and if the warning light comes back on then get them to replace the spiral cable under their repair warranty.

Thanks for that tip Kev, the sensor that activated the airbag warning light is the one for the side airbag, they are mounted on the door pillar on either side.

It would have been disconnected when they replaced that pillar, and probably wasn't reconnected when it was moved from the panel shop. just somewhat surprised that it didn't deploy during the collision.
