Hands free Phone connection issue.

When I turn on the car ignition my phone successfully connects via bluetooth to the hands free system as designed. When I receive an incoming call I am alerted via the head unit display and call tone etc as normal. When I press the phone answer button on the steering wheel the horn sounds but the phone does not connect. If I swipe down on the phones display all comes good and hands free communications is established successfully. Has anyone else experienced this issue. It may be a short circuit issue in the steering wheel harness connections etc. I have the Electronic Service Manual so will later try to figure out if I can find a solution doing some ESM research.

Cheers all.

What type of phone do you have Dave ? Has it had an update recently which might cause the connectivity to require some type of security permission to connect ?

Re: Hands free Phone connection issue.

No Kev. The phone had been working OK for a long time and no updates as far as I know. It is only recently that the issue of no phone answering from the steering wheel button has occurred. Previously however on a few occasions the horn did sound when I pressed the answer button on the steering wheel but connection to phone still happened OK. Now, the horn beeps but no connection. Sounds like a wiring issue in the steering wheel controls to me so will attempt to check it out in due course.
Meanwhile I have stuck a phone mount within reach and if the phone rings I will just swipe down on the phone screen and all will work hands free as it should through the vehicle microphone etc. Naughty I know but I either had to press the button on the steering wheel previously or now 1 finger swipe on the phone face attached to the holder. Horses for courses I guess.

Ps. I should add that I tried to unpair the phone from the system but the button on top of the phone answer button now only changes the radio/cd functions and phone settings are not mentioned. Hmmm...I will need to check it all out.

Recently had the air bag light come on. Had the clock spring changed. Air bag light all good. But now the phone accept and end buttons don’t work at all. The volume up button sends the system into diagnostic mode. Auto electrician says faulty buttons on steering wheel. Time to sell I’m thinking.

Re: Hands free Phone connection issue.

Hi Leo,
The issue I have is only presenting a minor irritation as I don't really get that many phone calls while I'm driving. If a call does come in my phone is in cradle and I look at the phone screen to see if the calling number is in my contact list. I can choose to ignore the call based on that. If I feel i need to answer I can simply quickly run my finger down the screen ( the naughty part) or my wife can if she is with me, to answer and then all is normal for hands free operation via bluetooth etc. as it should be.
It is just that the answer call button on the steering wheel doesn't connect the phone anymore and the horn beeps. I also can't unpair and re pair the phone as I could in the past using the toggle button menu on steering wheel. A little gremlin electrical problem is what I suspect and in time I may just try to find the problem and get it sorted out.

The exy is running great after purchasing new in August 2010 and I have only had to replace the aircon compressor and CV shafts in that time. I was planning on selling the exy back in 2020 and upgrading but circumstances changed and I decided to keep it. It has been a great vehicle to date.
 Cheers
cheers

If that is all that is wrong then just get another set of buttons. They are easy to remove and replace.

Re: Hands free Phone connection issue.

This is our second t31. Great cars. The daughter owns a 2015 ti, son 2016 stl and ours is 2011 stl. It’s amazing how different the t32 drives compared to t31. We love our Xtrail too. Thinking of buying a new Pajero sport.
