Re: Oil on the air filter and Oil Separator Leaks (T31 Diesel)

Since fitting my T31 diesel with a Provent IV jus a couple of thousand K’s ago. I changed the engine oil & filter and air filter at the same time. I can report all seems to be going well. I recently disconnected the hose from CC to air intake and found NO oil inside the hose, also the air filter is clear of oil stains. I may be imagining that the X trail pulls better, even quicker and I’m so far pleased I fitted the CC.

I will no clean the oil intercooler as I have it on reasonable assurance that oil in there will be minimal, the EGR valve may be a different story but I’m not troubled so far with poor acceleration and don’t wish to fish for issues that may not be there.

Re: Oil on the air filter and Oil Separator Leaks (T31 Diesel)

Hi All. I have had my 2012 T31 turbo diesel for about six months now. Best car I've ever had. A while back I fitted a Provent 2oo and it works well. There is quite a bit of oil in the drain tube and there is no more oil being splattered on the air filter. the unit I bought is I think, a knock off copy; it has a stainless steel fine mesh element that only needs washing occasionally, don't need to replace it. It cost about $60 NZ off Grandado. Pipes, hoses and jubilee clips came to about $65. I installed it myself: made up the bracket from some leftover in my shed, even had some old bolts on hand as well. So I'm pretty pleased with the way it is going. We went away last weekend to Taupo and Waitomo and with 5 up and some gear it was averaging 12.5-12.6 km/l which is 35.5 mpg in the old money. That is the mileage I used to get in my Austin 1300!!!! The car is a used Japper and at some stage I have to replace the entertainment system as it is all Japanese and the FM frequencies are wrong. I picked up a second hand tow bar which fitted straight up; now I can tow the newly acquired caravan, though we won't be going anywhere much until this Covid thing settles down. Cheers all from Hawke's Bay, NZ.

Uncle, well done with the cheapy CC. I’m interested in your 35.5 mpg, if that is US gallon =6.63l/100km. If NZ use imperial gallons=7.95/100km.

I’m convinced that blowback which collects in the CC is not “oil” you want returning to your engine via turbo!
I believe the Provent IV filter collects more “junk oil”, my finger inside the return hose tells me non of the stuff is getting back through to the air intake, and I like that.

Re: Oil on the air filter and Oil Separator Leaks (T31 Diesel)

Hi everyone. More to the CC install. I cleaned the mesh filter a few weeks back, I think it will need to be done regularly, about 3-4000 km. I took off the metal turbo pipe and cleaned that too; it was wet. I suspect the intercooler etc. will need doing also. Later maybe the EGR valve and the rest of the inlet system.
As yet there has not been a exhaust regen. There is a button for it, but nothing happens when it is pressed.....maybe it doesn't need it!
As for the fuel consumption; it is now up to 12.7km/l. with the price of diesel at the moment I am not yet suffering from car owner virus just yet,
The hoses are oil/fuel rated, came from the local irrigation/water pump place. The main lengths are to the size to fit the breather outlet from the engine and to the air inlet pipe. The pipes for the CC in and outlet are much bigger but conveniently fit over the smaller size pipes. They are glued together and clipped.

The air filter is still stained. I sprayed the stain with brakeclean and blew it clean a while back and is still dry. There is a couple more clips on since the pix were taken.
Try these for the pix, don't know if it will work.
Cheers,
Uncle Bullfrog.

Re: Oil on the air filter and Oil Separator Leaks (T31 Diesel)

I would love to have shared my Provent installation photos but it’s all too hard with flicka requirements.

I’m up to 5000km since install: no oil in return hose to intake and importantly NO oil on air filter element. Fuel economy 7.2lt/100km. Drain tap is exposed just infront of driver side wheel and easy to drain, very minimal amount drained so far. Very happy with set up and vehicle performance.
