Matching VIN, engine, and transmission numbers

G'day,

I'm planning on buying a 2007 T30 and am trying to match the VIN, engine and transmission numbers to make sure they haven't been swapped, as the seller has a few of them.

 The seller has sent me a photo of the build plate (which has a VIN but no engine number), and a photo of the engine number from the engine block.

I've searched everywhere online but couldn't find how to.match them up. It would be great if you could help with:

1. How do you match the engine and the chassis on a T30? Other than in the service books where it might only be handwritten.

2. How do you ensure it has the original transmission? Is there a transmission number on the transmission itself and where do you match that to, as it's not on the build plate.

3. The bulld plate shows that it's a "T30" and the build date shows "11/06". But when i put the VIN number into an online VIN decoder it says that it's a "2010 XTrail" because the 10th letter in the VIN is "A", but then in the detailed results below it says it was built in 10.2006.

Thanks in advance,
AB

Re: Matching VIN, engine, and transmission numbers

Hi AB. You made me curious so I checked my May 2010 built T31 and the 10th character of the chassis number on the build plate is also the letter A. (Chassis number is also the VIN number that appears on my registration papers).
At first glance at the VIN identification chart I looked up on google it shows A as 1980 as you stated.
On further study of the chart I noted that from 1980 to 2000 the alphabet letters from A to Y ( no I,O,Q,U or Z) were used. Then from 2001 t0 2009 numerals from 1 - 9 were used. Then from 2010 to 2020 letters of the alphabet were again used so 2010 shows A which is correct for my exy. Then from this year, 2021, numerals are again being used with 2021 being 1.

So from the chart I would expect that the 10th character should be the letter G for your 2006 built exy and if the Build Plate is showing a 11/06 build date but a chassis number with A as the 10th character then I would be asking some very serious questions of the seller.
So I can understand why you are hesitant.

Hope you can sort it all out.

Re: Matching VIN, engine, and transmission numbers

My 2002 built, 2003 bought from new T30 also has an A as the 10th letter in the VIN.
I know it is correct as I have been the only owner direct from the showroom.

I think you both have been looking at the American VIN system.
This site lists variations for American being separate from other parts of the world and if I follow through my VIN then it is all correct and the A will be for Sales Country (being Australia).
As an example ...
JN1 = Nissan Japan
T = Wagon
B = QR25DE engine (not shown though the list shows SR20DE which is of a similar family)
N = 5 seats, All-wheel drive 4x4
T30 = Platform
A = Sales region Australia (for America this is year of manufacture)
0 = fixed number
xxxxxx = 6-digit serial number

I think the only way you would be able to truly know is to contact Nissan and ServicesNSW for a complete history check of the Xtrail.

Well that sorts out query #3, many thanks Kev and dlpeek !

Kev,
Re #1 and 2, so you reckon I might be able to match those up by contacting Nissan and Services NSW yeah?

Thanks.

Re: Matching VIN, engine, and transmission numbers

The compliance plate lists type of vehicle, number of seats, VIN gross vehicle mass, approval number and date. This is the Australian compliance import plate.

The build plate lists VIN, model number, engine type and capacity, transmission type, colour and build date. That is the manufacturer's plate and usually fixed with Nissan stamped rivets.

Only 12 months ago I had my engine reconditioned and they had to replace the block after they cracked it through to the water jacket near one of the studs on reassembly. The engine number on my rego paper has not changed since last year but I know the reconditioner copied my paper and sent off the new block number for correction. (I might have to follow him up with that to make sure)

As far as I can tell there is no visible transmission serial number only the type.

If you have the VIN you can get a Revs check which includes an engine number and all details regarding ownership and previous damage/repair history.

Re: Matching VIN, engine, and transmission numbers

Brilliant, thanks Kev.

I'll do the check and report back.

I hope this one checks out as it has been garaged
most of it's life and only has about 120k on the clock.

Cheers!

Re: Matching VIN, engine, and transmission numbers

Update - got the full Revscheck done and all good. VIN and engine match

Very handy report. Especially as it shows the odometer readings from new, etc

So after a few other checks and a test drive I'll probably buy it.

Many thanks for your help. Was referred here by the RuggedLife youtube channel.
