Did you follow the instructions completely where it mentions to remove the pipe which is in the way of the bottom bolt ?.

Yes removed those three bolts. That only gave that pipe a few mm of movement. Noting it still has hoses attached at each end. I got to the point of having a 8mm ring scanner on the EGR bolt, but couldn’t rotate it enough to crack it loose..
is that small pipe supposed to be completely removed?

Re: EGR Valve Cleaning & EGR Related MIL Error Code

Not having a diesel myself I can only go by the description Todd put in the original post which does not say what he used to undo the 3rd bolt nor how easy or difficult it was, just that undoing the bolts for the metal pipe bracket allowed moving the pipe out of the way sufficiently to access the 3rd bolt on the EGR valve..

Re: EGR Valve Cleaning & EGR Related MIL Error Code

Hi All. That is a good way to clean those things. Oven cleaner is caustic soda--sodium hydroxide. It is readily available in its pure form. Be careful handling it though as it is a seriously strong chemical. Most strong industrial grade cleaners have it in it.

Re: EGR Valve Cleaning & EGR Related MIL Error Code

This is my egr valve. Anyone had brown gunge like this before? I had tried cleaning with Wynn's EGR cleaner before removing it. Notice the oil in my air filter too.

After properly cleaning the valve, the problems persisted (P0488 fault code and won't rev above 3000rpm).

I have unplugged the egr and the car runs fine. Would this suggest the egr is needing to be replaced and is it ok to run the car with it unplugged?

That's quite a bit of gunk.
Have you read through the thread about oil on the air filter and looked into installing a Provent ?

I have read that thread, thanks. I was thinking of blanking off the egr.

It is recommended not to remove the egr to use a blanking plate. These worked well in older diesel engines but the modern smarter deisels will see the function not working and throw a MIL light.

Please read the thread on P0488 MIL code first.

I believe you have to have the ecu reprogrammed if the egr is blanked off.
