Re: Gearbox issues
Many different vehicle makes with manual transmissions have some trouble shifting into a gear when cold. It's both due to thick oil until warmed combined with a cable shift mechanism which may not exert as much force as a hard mechanical shift mechanism.
Try letting the transmission idle for a few minutes in neutral after being parked overnight before moving off to see if that helps shifting.
By all means, flush and change the oil in the transmission as it won't harm anything and it is relatively cheap and easy to do so that one possible cause can be eliminated.

Re: Gearbox issues, some ideas
Maybe the clutch is running short, making it difficult for the box to sync or select second.
If not the clutch wearing out, the clutch actuation mechanism wearing, or the clutch master cylinder not providing enough pressure (worn cylinder seals), or the slave cylinder seals, there are things in the gearbox that can cause it, like worn selector forks, worn syncros, but these usually don't cause trouble unless abused until they've done 1M miles.
I'd suspect the clutch first, master and slave cylinders second. You can easily drain the clutch fluid and refresh it with new stuff just in case it helps the seals or has never been changed.
