X-TRAIL T31 4x4 PETROL NOV 2011 STEERING ISSUE

Hi Fellow X-Trail'ers and handy persons.
Found out about forum through search engine.

An issue has arisen with the steering and it has been going on for more than six months now and I want to resolve it.
Basically the steering feels sticky and when you turn the wheel, it fails to return back to centre straight away. Even under acceleration, the steering does not return immediately.
First port of call was the dealer as there was an airbag light that was flashing on the dash as well.
Great result for the flashing dash light, but was suggested that under inflated tyres could be causing the steering issue. Not convinced, but willing to give it a crack, I inflated the tyres above normal inflation levels and as suspected, no change. Lost confidence in dealer at this point and especially when the airbag dash light resumed within 3 months of being supposedly fixed.
I had two services done by two different mechanics and let them know of my issue and neither were able to pinpoint the issue.
Took it to a recommended wheel alignment place and they changed the clock spring higher up the steering column and that has rectified the airbag flashing dash light. As for the sticky steering they believe they have pinpointed the issue is somewhere within the power steering motor assembly. At 4.5k for the assembly replacement from Nissan, I am looking for alternate fixes. If anybody who may have also experienced the same issue or if someone can assist and provide a solution, it will be greatly appreciated.

Re: X-TRAIL T31 4x4 PETROL NOV 2011 STEERING ISSUE

Just confirming are they saying you'd need to replace the whole Electric Power Steering Rack (pricey) or just replace some type of Electric Servo Motor (not so pricey?)? I'm assuming the cost is high due to labour to do the work rather than the parts. Could you go down the path of 'reconditioned' or wrecker part, but not sure how much that would impact the overall cost.

The STC (STEERING CONTROL SYSTEM) and ST sections of the Electronic Service Manual has a decent set of instructions for diagnosis (and repair if you want to give it a go). Starts with sensors and works its ways down. See STC-27 for the diagnosis steps for when the steering wheel turning force is heavy.

I had a rather squeaky wheel on quick-lock turns and followed the manual to help diagnose the issue. Worth a shot.

Thanks for the guidance Nickelass.
4.5k is for just the motor assembly, not including the rack. The assembly comes as one part apparently.
Will look into perhaps diagnosing as you mention, but not that hands on savvy to start dismantling with any confidence.

Yeah I'm not mechanically minded, but I find with the right instructions and some exploration you can at least have a better guess at what is going on when you chat with a (good) mechanic. Bonus is you learn something new.

Just wondering, do you think you'd be able to get a 'reconditioned' motor assembly for cheaper? Might be worth asking around. For example, my mechanic and I decided to try a replacement air con compressor motor from the wreckers first, rather then try and source new. Worked out a lot cheaper and my 'conditioned' compressor works great no issues so far.

Hi FNQ Shano. I have exactly the same issue with our 2010 Xtrail. Did you ever get a solution? Our has gone from noticeable to a regular driver to being a concern. Thanks, Paul
