Re: 03 X trail transfer case engagement problem
When you said you bridged the 4WD relay, was that the power terminals or the control terminals ?
There are 3 things to check in the 4WD circuit which could cause a problem.
1. Faulty relay
2. Blown fuse
3. Disconnected or open circuit solenoid (the actual viscous clutch at the front of the rear diff).
If you have checked the relay with a new one, checked the fuse is good and checked the wiring continuity to the viscous clutch to make sure the wiring and solenoid are OK then it could be the connector on the 4WD control unit or the 4WD control unit output itself.
Since all your questions so far on the forum are about working on someone else's Xtrail, maybe you should invest in an Electronic Workshop Manual to help your diagnosis ?

Re: 03 X trail transfer case engagement problem
There will be a connector under the Xtrail near the rear differential which you will be able to disconnect and test the continuity with a meter. For an 03 Xtrail it should read 2.45 Ohms
