Hello Ladies and Gents,
If you're lucky enough to be travelling for the Easter break, and have Garmin's Lifetime Free Map Updates, you've received an early Easter present.
Garmin have released Australia and New Zealand maps, version 2022.10
Prior to installing the maps, however, you'll need to download the latest Garmin Express, version 7.3.1.0 onto your PC. Once done connect your Garmin and allow Garmin Express to 'find' the GPS.
Then simply read through the offered updates (most of which are not applicable to Australia) dot-point the A & NZ 2022.10 update and press Install.
Simples ! emoticon

Re: GPS navigation

Hi BP,

I have Garmin Mobile PC software running on my CarPC. It uses Garmin maps which I currently get from an ebay seller as a zip file that I unzip and place a couple of files into specific directories to update my maps.

Can you tell me a few details about your map updates ?
Can it be downloaded as a file or just installed direct to your Garmin ?
If it can, is it a zip file and what are the files inside it ?

Re: GPS navigation

And once more I thank you BP for your notification of a map update. I have just successfully installed the updated version of Garmin Express and have successfully updated the maps. My Garmin may be old but it still works great and as you stated, it's great to have lifetime free map updates.

Kev, BP may be able to answer your question but all I do on an old laptop running Windows 7 is to click the Garmin Express icon on the desktop and it comes up showing my GPS Garmin model. I click the link and it replies that map updates are available. I plug my GPS into the laptop and Garmin Express recognises it and and asks me to either continue or cancel. I simply click continue and after I click Agree to terms and conditions etc the "system" just goes ahead and automatically prepares my device for an update in stage 1 and then stage 2 updates the maps.

The "how" of how the update is done I have no idea but after a while the system responds that updates were successful. I unplug the GPS and turn it on outside and all looks good.

That's all I can tell you about the updates.

cheers

Re: GPS navigation

Unfortunately Kev, Garmin are rather secretive about their map data, so what format they use I can't tell you. Logic would suggest that it's a Zip file.

It is possible, however, to download map update files straight to your PC, and this allows you to use their facility called "Base Camp". See https://www.garmin.com/en-AU/software/basecamp/
These downloads are at no charge, and can be installed on both Windows and Mac machines.
But not having used Base Camp I can't vouch for it's usefulness, however it might be an interesting exercise to download to your PC and see if you can transfer the data to your car.

Re: GPS navigation

All I should need is your download saved to a file rather than installed directly into your Garmin. I'll then be able to look at the zip file to see if it has the same files as my last update did.

Unfortunately since Basecamp is free software, you still have to pay for the map updates with it installed.

Re: GPS navigation

This was my worry when I replied to your question.
I couldn't see how anyone could download map updates for free. One imagines that all of the GPS map companies pay IT specialists to ensure that they don't 'give away product'.
....and sharing over this Forum would undoubtedly get us all into a whole lot of trouble.

Re: GPS navigation

Bad news for some with Lifetime Map Updates. Sorry.

Sensis Maps have informed Garmin that they will no longer supply maps in their old format - and the latest format is not conducive with older Garmin GPS units.
Meaning? Those with older units will no longer be able to download Free Lifetime Map Updates. emoticon
So when is 'Lifetime' not for life? Same as when Ansett went belly-up...I was an Ansett Frequent Flyer Life Member - but I didn't realise that it wasn't for the period of MY life, no, for the period of the airline's life!
And such is this scenario. You only had free map updates whilst Sensis were in business to supply them.

Just to clarify a point - the above problem concerns only older models which rely on Sensis Maps.
Others, read 'more recent models' which use Whereis Mapping are not affected and will continue to receive their Free Lifetime Map Updates.

Anyone wishing to discuss with Garmin Australia, their phone number has changed to 1800 235 822.

You may be able to wring Garmin's arm for some type of discount on a replacement if you read this Choice article about the ACCC and "lifetime" wording

Re: GPS navigation

Well my NUVI 1350 is certainly an old model but it has served me well in Oz and NZ. I will definitely give Garmin a call in due course and have a bit of a chin wag. They will find it very hard to convince me that "Lifetime" map updates only applies to GPS that can cope with modern technolgy. Although a new GPS system is something I have previous considered I have a very strong conviction that "if it ain't broke then it does not need replacement". My NUVI is still great so when the time comes it will be interesting what Garmin has to say. I will wait until the results of any new update attempt in the future.

cheers
