Tyre Trek fitted to a T31
Hi all,
Just fitted a Tyre Trek with dual jerry can holders to a T31 & thought I'd provide some details for anyone with a T31 that might be interested in getting one.
Prior to purchasing I did my research and comparisons with other products & felt that Tyre Trek was the best option and it was also the cheapest. I measured up based on the on-line specs & was concerned that clearance between the jerry can holder & back of the exy might be an issue so instead of ordering on-line decided to make the 4hr return trip to Penrith TJM to try one first. (A big wrap here for these guys as they couldn't have been more helpful, even staying open half an hour late while we tried their display bar & then fitted the new one)
The bar has 2 pin settings for the tow bar with the preferred position, when carrying full jerry cans, being the pin hole closest to the bar. In this position though the jerry can holders touched the back of the car. I got lucky though as the store had a special order for a customer with a hi lux where the jerry can holders had been off set, but the customer hadn't returned to collect it. So we tried this with the bar at the recommened pin setting and it fitted perfectly.
I could have fitted the bar with the standard jerry can holders, but felt better about it being fixed at the preferred pin point. I'd recommend anyone wanting one to see their local TJM store for a trial and if ordering have the jerry can holders specially made offset so they sit further out. When fitted at the recommended point though the clearance for the rear door is extremely minimal, about 2mm, so definitely worthwhile checking.

Re: Tyre Carrier
Hi Ray,
The cost was $1510 with the dual jerry can holders. I'm not sure whether all TJM stores stock it, but the Tyre Trek website lists those that do.
The part numbers on my receipt are:
TTBASE - for the Tyre Trek Base Unit;
TTDJH - Dual jerry can holder, but as mentioned in my post this was a special order for Penrith TJM and I don't think the part number reflects that.
Also note of caution since posting I have had to make some adjustments to the carrier so that I can fit a 235 try (although I currently have 225s) without being squashed against the jerry can holders. I purchased four alloy wheel spacers to move the spare wheel out by around 12mm and also 3mm washers which I've added to the jerry holder bolts to move it closer to the car. On the right I've used 2 and on the left I've used 3. The spare still sits against the right side holder, but is well clear on the left and when I replace my current tyres it'll be interesting to see how tight the fit is then.
I've got one photo without the jerry can holder and the other one I took today (yes it was snowing!), as I'm in the middle of loading the car for an 8 week trip to Birdsville and North QLD, leaving on Sunday. They're not great pictures, but the only one's I have at the moment and I probably won't have time to post any more before we leave.
Don't hesitate to email Tyre trek as they are very helpful.
Although it hasn't been as straight forward fitting it as I thought it was going to be it has definitely been a worthwhile purchase. The trip North will definitely test it out.
Oh by the way on my first visit to TJM I explained to them what I was doing and how much weight I estimated there was going to be on the carrier, in the back of the Exy and on the roof and they recommended air suspension. I have since had that fitted through Pedders.
