Tyre Trek fitted to a T31

Hi all,

Just fitted a Tyre Trek with dual jerry can holders to a T31 & thought I'd provide some details for anyone with a T31 that might be interested in getting one.

Prior to purchasing I did my research and comparisons with other products & felt that Tyre Trek was the best option and it was also the cheapest. I measured up based on the on-line specs & was concerned that clearance between the jerry can holder & back of the exy might be an issue so instead of ordering on-line decided to make the 4hr return trip to Penrith TJM to try one first. (A big wrap here for these guys as they couldn't have been more helpful, even staying open half an hour late while we tried their display bar & then fitted the new one)

The bar has 2 pin settings for the tow bar with the preferred position, when carrying full jerry cans, being the pin hole closest to the bar. In this position though the jerry can holders touched the back of the car. I got lucky though as the store had a special order for a customer with a hi lux where the jerry can holders had been off set, but the customer hadn't returned to collect it. So we tried this with the bar at the recommened pin setting and it fitted perfectly.

I could have fitted the bar with the standard jerry can holders, but felt better about it being fixed at the preferred pin point. I'd recommend anyone wanting one to see their local TJM store for a trial and if ordering have the jerry can holders specially made offset so they sit further out. When fitted at the recommended point though the clearance for the rear door is extremely minimal, about 2mm, so definitely worthwhile checking.

Allan

Re: Tyre Carrier

Hi Ray,

The cost was $1510 with the dual jerry can holders. I'm not sure whether all TJM stores stock it, but the Tyre Trek website lists those that do.

The part numbers on my receipt are:
TTBASE - for the Tyre Trek Base Unit;
TTDJH - Dual jerry can holder, but as mentioned in my post this was a special order for Penrith TJM and I don't think the part number reflects that.

Also note of caution since posting I have had to make some adjustments to the carrier so that I can fit a 235 try (although I currently have 225s) without being squashed against the jerry can holders. I purchased four alloy wheel spacers to move the spare wheel out by around 12mm and also 3mm washers which I've added to the jerry holder bolts to move it closer to the car. On the right I've used 2 and on the left I've used 3. The spare still sits against the right side holder, but is well clear on the left and when I replace my current tyres it'll be interesting to see how tight the fit is then.

I've got one photo without the jerry can holder and the other one I took today (yes it was snowing!), as I'm in the middle of loading the car for an 8 week trip to Birdsville and North QLD, leaving on Sunday. They're not great pictures, but the only one's I have at the moment and I probably won't have time to post any more before we leave.

Don't hesitate to email Tyre trek as they are very helpful.

Although it hasn't been as straight forward fitting it as I thought it was going to be it has definitely been a worthwhile purchase. The trip North will definitely test it out.

Oh by the way on my first visit to TJM I explained to them what I was doing and how much weight I estimated there was going to be on the carrier, in the back of the Exy and on the roof and they recommended air suspension. I have since had that fitted through Pedders.

Re: Tyre Carrier

Hey Allan, the pics are good and give us an idea of what the setup looks like, along with pics of other members's posts.

Would be great to get a trip report with lotsa pics when you return from your Birdsville/Nth Qld
trip...........as well as how well the tyre carrier performed as I have been considering one myself.

cheers and have a great journey........

Re:

There is a red exy on the Tyre Trek facebook page, - that's me.
I've since added air bags to the rear springs and a bit more load on top in prep for my 3.5 months run around.
You will need 18 mm spacers of some sort to fit a 235 tyre onto the carrier.

Re:

It is easy to get an accessory plate from the relevant transport department for you state and use that.
A: it is the right size for the spot
B: you don't need to keep removing and replacing your car plate every time you put the tyre carrier on.

Also if you wire your lights like I have to be only on the reverse light power; Be aware that the reverse light may have a place in the trailer socket, but will not be wired if the wiring was done by nissan. As their manuals do not have it as a normal install wire for the socket. I found this out at 10:30pm at night while I was putting it all together and the rear bash plate does an excellent job of covering every up.

Re: Tyre carrier

my spare is a 16inch and the others 17nch and I've been told that if I get a flat outback and travel 100s kms before I get the 17inch fixed I'll stuff the car up. So even if I'm OK with unloading the car i still have the same dilemma as you guys. So far I just stayed on the bitumen. But I want to go Oodnadatta
I heard of someone who put the spare on the back door of their med 4x4 and the door collapsed and I'm not strong enough to get it down off the roof. I've even considered buying a trailer but I'm leaning towards trying to find a way to get it off the roof pully or something. If only the spare was a 17inch unloading the car does not sound as bad an idea anymore. 17inch rim with tyre does not fit in the spare space and I'm really bummed about it because other than that I love my new purchase

Re: Tyre Carrier

Hi Lucy. I understand your concern with the spare.16" wheel. I also had the same concern back when I purchased the car but I actually then managed to source a 17" alloy rim (the same as on my exy) from a tyre yard and had a tyre fitted to match that on the exy. Some weeks later the tyre yard rang to say they had another 17" alloy rim the same as mine so I snapped it up.
I now have a full size spare in the spare wheel well and when traveling on holidays with a fridge and dual battery etc in the back I put the other spare in a roof basket. Nothing worse than getting a flat tyre then having to unload the cargo area to get to the spare.

Perhaps you could also source a 17" rim to match your exy and have the same size tyre fitted to suit. If you cargo area is full when you travel then I can understand your desire for a wheel carrier if you were unable to take a spare from the roof. I have also been thinking about a wheel carrier but certainly would not mount a spare on the rear cargo area door.

Best of luck sorting it out and hope someone has a solution for you.

cheers
