Heater inlet hose blocked deliberately?

Many months ago I repaired & replaced my radiator which of course meant replacing all the coolant too. Since this event I have never had warm air from any of the cabin vents. I just assumed that the system just had an airblock and needed bleeding. I never needed cabin heating so left it be..

The workshop manual details a simple procedure to do this which involves removing the upper hose from the heater core at the bulkhead, raising it 4"and filling the system slowly until coolant is seen escaping from the exposed hosebarb.

The ambient temp in PH has actually been pretty cool for a few weeks now and I have wanted warm air on a few occasions. So, I had a couple of hours today to have a look. The bulkhead connections for the heater hoses are a totally pain to get to.. but I managed to remove the upper one to go through the bleeding/filling properly. Then I saw a cream coloured insert/bung stuck into the heater hosebarb!! ..its solid and wont let coolant flow - certainly explains the lack of cabin heat.

it looks like a genuine thing.... since a cabin heater is very seldom needed here it is quite possibke that it left the factory like that..

Anyone else in the tropics seen anything like this?

trying to get a pic up..

it originally had a longer centre part ... but it pulled off when i gave it a gentle tug ... i guess the rubber has weakened over the years ...

Anyone have a clue what this insert/bung thing might be? .....

Re: Heater inlet hose blocked deliberately?

so .. it turns out they are just bungs/plugs used to prevent coolant flowing through the heater matrix. It seems dealers here in PH often fit them to effectively disable the cabin heater.

anyway ...both plugs removed now.. and coolant flowing successfully into the matrix ..cabin heat at last ..

should a red hot heater matrix in the cabin prove to be a problem when the climate returns to something like normal, then I may have to revisit this and plug/bypass the heater core again...

perhaps a pair of 1/4 turn valves in the lines would be handy ... cos getting access to those bulkhead connections isnt much fun.

we shall see ...
