Having looked at the area under a strong light in the garage I think you're right. Looks like we were struck by something that impacted the windscreen right on top of the rain sensor so it was very hard to see.
Getting the windscreen replaced under an insurance job tomorrow. Thankfully, it will cost me nothing.
