T30 II Sunroof Leaking ?? - Check Drain hoses are not blocked..
** DISCLAIMER **
This specifically applies to the T30 II X-Trail - I am not sure if T30 series 1 are different as the other posts only mention the front drain holes.
The factory sunroof in my 2005 T30 II Ti-L has 4 drain holes that are located at each corner. This makes sense as if the car is parked up hill or down hill, then the water is able to drain away...
LOCATION
The front ones are very easy to see and take a minute or so to clean (depending how much gunk there is) They are located in both front corners and are about 9mm in diameter.
FRONT DRAIN HOLES (Passenger side)
The rear ones are at the rear corners, and these require some trim removal in order to be able to access them. The rear Cargo roof light needs to be removed, along with the small plug clips either side and in front of the light that hold the roof lining up. You also need to remove the rear tailgate door rubber so that you can gain access to the space between the roof lining and the metal roof.
These drains are much larger in doameter (approx 25mm) as they are tasked with the majority of the debris and water that needs removing from the sunroof channel.
REAR DRAIN HOSE (Passenger side)
CLEANING
Access and cleaning of the front drains is very easy. Open the sunroof and you can easily access the holes in the corners with wither the wind deflector up or down. I found that leaving it up was much easier. Now, some suggest using and air compressor or firing water down the tube, however - if there is a large blockage, you run the risk of either blowing the hose off the opening hole, or having the water shoot back at you and into the car...
I use either 5 or 7 core trailer wire. I use this for a couple of reasons..
1. It is flexible enough to follow the contours and corners of the drain hose.
2. It is firm enough to be able to scrape the sides and remove any blockage by being pushed through..
3. It can be used for washing out the hose once you have finished the scraping if you don't have access to any 10mm tubing..
I usually use about 1 Metre and gently push it down the hole and then bring it back and check it for mud and dirt etc. if it is hard to push down - keep pushing back and forward and you should be able to dislodge the debris. Do this for both front ones, then move to the back...
With the roof lining down a little - access the hoses at the rear and gently remove them from the fitting. do the same as the front ones - place the cable down through the tube and clear out any blockages.
Then, push the cable back through the fitting to make sure there are no blockages there also.. Don't pull the tube out too far as you will unseat it from it's drain away location (see later pics)
HOSE REMOVED FROM FITTING (Drivers side)
Once you have done this and no longer need the trailer cable for pushing, you can removed the internal cables and it then becomes a long straw that you can use to force water down to drain hoses (Front and Rear) to wash away the remaining debris... Place the 'straw' down the hose by about 5-10cm and if you have a squeezee bottle that matches the hose size, use that - otherwise - just take a mouth full of water and spit it through the other end of the tube and do this a few times until you can see that the water coming out the other end onto the ground is clean... Repeat this for all other drains...
Once this is done to all drains - (and rear hoses are reconnected) wipe down the sunroof channels with a damp rag to remove any dirt or debris. once this is done - get a small amount of water and pour it into the channels. depending which way your vehicle is sittng - it will either run forwards or backwards and just make sure that the drains are working properly... make sure you turn the car around and check BOTH front and rear drains are allowing the water to flow away freely..
RAIN CHANNEL (Passenger side)
GUIDE CHANNEL (Passenger side)
CAUTIONS
Remember above I said do not put the rear drain hose out too far when you are cleaning it.... This is because the drain hose in the rear runs down the INSIDE of the D Pillar and then has a kink near the end where it exits the vehicle and allows the water to flow out behind the side of the rear bumper.
REAR DRAIN HOSE - Kinked at the bottom...
If this hose does not kink and go out that hole - then any water that flows down that drain hose will end up in your spare tyre well and beside your tools etc....
So, when it's all back together and you do the flow test down the rain channel - if the water exits behind the bumper - it's fine.. if you don't see any water - investigate..
DRAIN HOSE BEHIND THIS TRIM PANEL, - WILL FILL UP THE GAP UNDER THE PANEL AND SEEP INTO THE SPARE WHEEL WELL..
LOOKING THROUGH THE SMALL OPENING UP TOWARDS THE HOSE EXIT...
You can feel up there to make sure it's point out...
Hope this helps...
