T30 II Sunroof Leaking ?? - Check Drain hoses are not blocked..

** DISCLAIMER **
This specifically applies to the T30 II X-Trail - I am not sure if T30 series 1 are different as the other posts only mention the front drain holes.

The factory sunroof in my 2005 T30 II Ti-L has 4 drain holes that are located at each corner. This makes sense as if the car is parked up hill or down hill, then the water is able to drain away...

LOCATION
The front ones are very easy to see and take a minute or so to clean (depending how much gunk there is) They are located in both front corners and are about 9mm in diameter.

Image
FRONT DRAIN HOLES (Passenger side)

The rear ones are at the rear corners, and these require some trim removal in order to be able to access them. The rear Cargo roof light needs to be removed, along with the small plug clips either side and in front of the light that hold the roof lining up. You also need to remove the rear tailgate door rubber so that you can gain access to the space between the roof lining and the metal roof.

These drains are much larger in doameter (approx 25mm) as they are tasked with the majority of the debris and water that needs removing from the sunroof channel.

Image
REAR DRAIN HOSE (Passenger side)

CLEANING

Access and cleaning of the front drains is very easy. Open the sunroof and you can easily access the holes in the corners with wither the wind deflector up or down. I found that leaving it up was much easier. Now, some suggest using and air compressor or firing water down the tube, however - if there is a large blockage, you run the risk of either blowing the hose off the opening hole, or having the water shoot back at you and into the car...

I use either 5 or 7 core trailer wire. I use this for a couple of reasons..
1. It is flexible enough to follow the contours and corners of the drain hose.
2. It is firm enough to be able to scrape the sides and remove any blockage by being pushed through..
3. It can be used for washing out the hose once you have finished the scraping if you don't have access to any 10mm tubing..

I usually use about 1 Metre and gently push it down the hole and then bring it back and check it for mud and dirt etc. if it is hard to push down - keep pushing back and forward and you should be able to dislodge the debris. Do this for both front ones, then move to the back...

With the roof lining down a little - access the hoses at the rear and gently remove them from the fitting. do the same as the front ones - place the cable down through the tube and clear out any blockages.
Then, push the cable back through the fitting to make sure there are no blockages there also.. Don't pull the tube out too far as you will unseat it from it's drain away location (see later pics)

Image
HOSE REMOVED FROM FITTING (Drivers side)

Once you have done this and no longer need the trailer cable for pushing, you can removed the internal cables and it then becomes a long straw that you can use to force water down to drain hoses (Front and Rear) to wash away the remaining debris... Place the 'straw' down the hose by about 5-10cm and if you have a squeezee bottle that matches the hose size, use that - otherwise - just take a mouth full of water and spit it through the other end of the tube and do this a few times until you can see that the water coming out the other end onto the ground is clean... Repeat this for all other drains...

Once this is done to all drains - (and rear hoses are reconnected) wipe down the sunroof channels with a damp rag to remove any dirt or debris. once this is done - get a small amount of water and pour it into the channels. depending which way your vehicle is sittng - it will either run forwards or backwards and just make sure that the drains are working properly... make sure you turn the car around and check BOTH front and rear drains are allowing the water to flow away freely..

Image
RAIN CHANNEL (Passenger side)

GUIDE CHANNEL (Passenger side)

CAUTIONS

Remember above I said do not put the rear drain hose out too far when you are cleaning it.... This is because the drain hose in the rear runs down the INSIDE of the D Pillar and then has a kink near the end where it exits the vehicle and allows the water to flow out behind the side of the rear bumper.

Image
REAR DRAIN HOSE - Kinked at the bottom...

If this hose does not kink and go out that hole - then any water that flows down that drain hose will end up in your spare tyre well and beside your tools etc....
So, when it's all back together and you do the flow test down the rain channel - if the water exits behind the bumper - it's fine.. if you don't see any water - investigate..

Image
DRAIN HOSE BEHIND THIS TRIM PANEL, - WILL FILL UP THE GAP UNDER THE PANEL AND SEEP INTO THE SPARE WHEEL WELL..

Image
LOOKING THROUGH THE SMALL OPENING UP TOWARDS THE HOSE EXIT...
You can feel up there to make sure it's point out...

Hope this helps...

Re: T30 II Sunroof Leaking ?? - Check Drain hoses are not blocked..

Hey Captain, thanks for the info on cleaning the sun roof drain tubes. I just bought a 2006 ST-S and have a water leak in the boot area. I thought it was coming in from behind the taillights and the rubber grommets, but cleaned and reseated them and it still leaks.

Your post has me wondering if the rear drain hoses are blocked or disconnected from the end where it should drain out behind the bumper.

Your post doesn't have the photos any more - is there any way you could reload them, so I can better understand where to look?

Thanks!

It's unfortunate vidamas that many pics on this forum were posted using Photobucket which for many years had a basic freeimage hosting platform posting/facility. Those days have gone and most Photobucket images are no longer visible.
The post by CaptK you are referring to is over 3 years old and whether he still accesses this forum is unknown. Perhaps you may get a reply if you PM CaptK?
I notice that you use Postimage as a free image hosting platform in some of your other posts. Is it easy to use? I tried it briefly but no luck yet. Will have another go later.

Cheers

Hi Dave,
Yes it's very unfortunate that Photobucket pulled their tricks and so many photos are lost on this and other forums.

I have only started using this forum, and found Postimage to be the only photo hosting site that was free, and free from frustration when using it. You're not required to create an account, and the first couple photos I uploaded were without an account. Once the photo is uploaded they give multiple link options, which is handy to just copy and paste the link into the forum post. Hopefully it'll work for you the next time you try it.

I will send CaptK a PM to see if he can offer any further help on the sun roof drain tubes.

Heya,
Just rec'd your PM, thanks..

I no longer technically own my X-Trail - but sold it for a mate about 2 years ago who still has it and I get conned / roped into fixing things for him / doing his stereo install etc, so I am still pretty familiar with the car..

I will see if I still have the pics anywhere.

Re: T30 II Sunroof Leaking ?? - Check Drain hoses are not blocked..

Had look through and can not find the pics unfortunately,
I suspect they were taken on my phone and that phone is long gone now..

From memory, (until I can see my old car again to confirm) the drain hoses from the rear of the sunroof run down the side roof of the vehicle on each side and then drop down into the rear quarter (via the "D pillar or last upright at the rear) If you remove the trims and covers on the inside of the rear quarter panels (at the bottom near the floor, you can see the hose. Also, check the top by gently lowering the roof lining a little and shine a torch in there to locate the lhose and look for any obvious kinks / obstructions.

Where are you located ??

Thanks for the descriptions Captain. I went ahead and started disassembling the interior panels to try and find the drain hose, and also hopefully the source of the leak in my wheel well.

Didn't have much trouble getting things apart.

Here's a view of the passenger side rear sun roof drain hose:
Image

The drain hole is much further back than I would have imagined!

Here's the drain hose as it goes down the D-Pillar:

Everything looked normal, and the drain hose went through the body panel and seemingly out behind the bumper. I haven't put water through it yet to test it but it looked relatively clean.

I also had a look at the rubber grommets where the wires for the taillights and the defogger come through the D-Pillar. Both look pretty snug. I'm a bit baffled now where water could possibly be coming in from! I might try hosing it down with the panels off and see if I can spot a trickle anywhere.

Thanks for the help!

And to answer your question, I'm located in the Inner West. Planning a trip down this way??! emoticon

Yes, they all look connected as they should as as long as they are running outside of the vehicle (and not blocked) they shouldn't be causing any internal leaks..

see if you can get a bit of 5 or 7 core trailer cable into the hose and ensure they are clear and then try trickling some water down them using the same cable as described in my first post.. and see if it exist the vehicle behind the bumper.

I was asking where you were in case you couldn't find the drain hoses I may have been able to assist. But looks like you found them ok.

Cheers
Jason

Hey Jason,
I was able to pour some water down the sides of the sunroof with the car pointing uphill and then downhill. All 4 drain tubes were fine and I got water out the bottom of the car for each.

Glad that the sunroof is not the culprit, but still can't find how I'm getting water into the left (passenger side) corner of the boot.

I see on the forum that a few other people had a similar issue with water pooling there, but unfortunately none of the threads end with a solution!

Here's a link to where I posted the info on my leak https://baustralianxtrail.runboard.com/p2097778#post2097778
