posticon T31 - Noise while coasting at low speeds. Dealer has no idea.

Hi Everyone,

I have a Nissan X-Trail T31 2008 with about 75,000 Kilometres on it.

As of maybe a month ago, when going very slowly (maybe 5-10 kilometres per hour) it makes kind of a groaning / grinding sound. It only seems to do this when I am coasting - as soon as I touch the gas it stops. Throwing it into neutral stops it as. Whether I'm using FWD, AWD, or lock has no impact. Turning doesn't make the sound any worse.

The transmission was changed a few months ago, and I've since taken it back into the dealership but they can't work out what is wrong with it. According to Nissan there are some issues with wheel bearings but this doesn't sound like that.

Here's a clip of the audio - sorry it's bit quiet but you can make it out.

I've looked around online a lot and I can find a few people with similar complains, but I haven't found a helpful solution.

Any idea what that might be?

Forgot to add - Automatic, Petrol

A couple of things to check
- Brake pads front and rear to make sure they are not too worn
- front and rear brake calipers to make sure there is not a stone or twig lodged in somewhere
- centre bearing in the driveshaft to the rear diff and pinion bearing at the back of the transmission for looseness indicating wear
- front and rear hub nuts for tightness which could cause a wheel bearing to be loose and rotate inside the hub

Thanks Revhead,

Dealer checked the brakes and calipers and said they were fine and even cleaned them up.
I think if something was stuck in there it would make some noise at speeds other than 5 kilometers, and it would still make noises in neutral. In my case, push the brakes also stops the noise.

--> Would these be visible/check-able by myself from underneath? I enjoy checking this sort of thing myself when I can emoticon

To check the centre driveshaft bearing and pinion bearing all you need to do is get under your Xtrail and while grabbing the driveshaft give it a good "wiggle". It should not move or clunk.

To check the wheel hub nuts, one way is to jack up your Xtrail and with the wheel off the ground try wiggling it sideways as if you are trying to turn the wheel. There should be no sloppiness and should be firm.

Re:

Hard to tell exactly but it could just be the cvt noise. As above, if it is only apparent in a no load situation, ie not decelerating or accelerating but just coasting where any gears/driveshafts can be swapping from drive/decel, it could be the pinion/crown noise in one of the diffs or the cvt.

If its no different in fwd or awd mode then it would likely narrow it don to transmission, front drive shafts/hubs etc

our t31 cvt has makes the a similar noise that must be the cvt, it has done this since we bought it (used) and its been the same for the last 10 years.

If it didnt do it before the transmission change, that could be your culprit.

Cheers

To my ears it sounds exactly like a stone caught in the brake discs. I often had that problem with my T31 (braking does stop the noise temporarily). If it is that, it will eventually fall out when it's ground down enough!

Re:

Hi Bob,

That's one of the first things we checked! However since it only happens between certain very low speeds is suspect.

@Artmyr2 - Before the transmission change it made a noise as well but honestly I can't remember what it was anymore. It could have been the same noise! I recall it being louder but I might be mistaken.

Why you change the transmition with only 75K?

Can you install the app CVTZ50 in your phone and capture the screen like this one:

HI Marcelo,

They will need more than just the app on their phone to capture CVT information. They will also need an OBDII interface of some sort so you should also let them know which you have that works with the app and maybe the type of phone you connect it to.
