T31 2.0 diesel M9R fuel leak underneath motor

Hi all,

I have bought a 2nd hand T31 from an German Nissan dealer. Someone else picked it up and imported it for me. I haven't seen the car yet but already some issue. I thought to get your input on this. See this picture, there is an open fuel line. Location is right underneath the engine, you'll need to remove the cover plate to see it properly. I believe it is just in front of the turbo cooling pump.

This fuel pipe is not connected to anything, just open ended, and losing a several drops of fuel per second.
Anyone knows which pipe exactly this is? (see diagram below). Is it supposed to be open ended or did some hose come loose?

Cheers

No pipe which leaks fuel should be loose. It would be a potential fire hazard even though it is diesel.

If the Xtrail still drives OK and the leak is just a few drops each second then my guess is it could be the return pipe to the fuel tank. This is like an overpressure line. A loose hose to an injector would lose way more fuel than a few drops as it would be pressurised to the common rail pressure.

Trace through the hoses according to your diagram to see if you can locate all the fuel lines and you should find which one it is.

Re:

Kev,

Thanks. Yeah I was thinking return-to-tank of fuel pump, fuel filter or the low pressure return from injectors. There is also a 10bar backpressure on the injectors (see second line connected to injectors on diagram), but this is ofcourse not possible, 10bars would leak like a karcher emoticon.
Anyway, the Nissan garage is taking care of it, I didn't even see it yet, I'm sure they will fix it but just wanted to brainstorm already a bit and see if anyone knows already exactly which location in the diagram this is.
Because if it is the return of the fuel pump I'm slightly worried that the fuel pump is worn out a bit, but it could also be completely normal (same story for the injectors).

And indeed it would seem crasy to me to leave a pipe open ended even if there normally no leak, for the fire hazard that you mention. Actually that is how they noticed the issue. The cars behind the driver on the motorway were blinking,... he looked and saw smoke... if this was petrol engine it would already be in flames.
He reduces speed to 70km/h and the drops stopped hitting he exhaust.

Cheers. I'll let you know the story from the garage.

Re:

Soo...they fixed it. They said that a fuel pipe was not properly tightened during previous maintenance. Still it seems that the pipe at the bottom of the engine (see picture above) should be open ended. Apparently it is an overflow in case of leaks inside the engine so that the fuel does not come in areas of the engine where it is not supposed to (in the sump or in the cooling water system for example I guess).
I will check when I get the car if this overflow pipe is still open ended at the bottom.

If anyone has the time to verify this on their car that would be great. I think its not too much work, maybe you can see it if you shine a light or you might need to take off the cover plate underneath the engine.
