Power options for dash cam (dashcam) into T31

OK, a couple of recent incidents means I’m really keen to have footage available in the future.

Nothing exotic needed, probably a pair (front and rear) of mini 80x or BlueSky B1W, but I’m really not happy with the power cable dangling down the windscreen or, for the rear one, risking it getting caught up in the tailgate. I’m not fussed about having parking footage capability, so happy to have the power turn off with the ignition.

So, for the front, how simple is it to remove the internal covers off the A pillar and does that then give you access somewhere vertically down through the dash to either the mini fuse casing on the lower right or through to the front aux power socket / cig lighter?

For the rear, is it relatively simple to remove the interior panels down the side of the tailgate and then access the tailgate wiring flexi tube to get into the boot itself, maybe to the aux power located there?

I’m keen:

1/ Not to reinvent the wheel. I’m guessing some of you have already had the pain and come up with a neat solution.

2/ Not to end up needlessly breaking internal trim / headlining fixings through not knowing a particular trim removal technique.

Thanks in advance

Daryl

Re: Power options for dash cam (dashcam) into T31

I have a Street Guardian on the front screen and I just tucked the wiring under the roof lining across to the front RHS pillar, tucking it in without removing the pillar cover and continuing down to the drivers kick panel. If you pull the rubber door seal away from the body from top to bottom, it gives you the room to tuck it in under the cover. From there I went under the dash and up into the top dash centre console where I have a 1 to 4 12v power supply and plugged it in there. There's a DIY on this forum on how to do the dash console mod. The wiring is all hidden and you wouldn't know the camera is there.
On the rear screen I have a B1W (great camera for the price). I tried to thread the power supply through the rubber hose at the top of the rear door, but it wouldn't go through. The wire hangs down just enough but it's not in the way of anything. From there I have the wire tucked in at the top LHS plastic trim to another 1 to 4 power supply which I have double taped to the quarter window. That supply gets 12v from the power supply at the back there. Basically I didn't remove any trim because I know how easily those clips break.
The B1W has nice clear video and also has wifi to review and download the footage. It also comes with all the clips and door trim removing tool, etc. I bought 4 of them for other vehicles and haven't had a problem with any of them.

Hope this helps. Cheers.

Eric, that is such a helpful reply. Thank you!

You're absolutely right, access is pretty good just removing that door seal, and there's also a fuse box accessible inside the cabin pretty much exactly on the cable run.

I'm just off to search the forum to see what those fuses protect / check they aren't critical function ones, and do turn off with the ignition, and probably piggy back on there if it looks sensible. I'll leave the rear camera until I've gained a bit of experience with the front!

Thanks again.
