T31 Noisy Air Conditioner Compressor

I started hearing a knocking noise coming from the engine bay right through the rev range, but louder at idle. I turned the a/c off and the noise disappeared. Looking down at the a/c pulley with the engine running and the a/c off with a torch, the pulley was spinning smoothly. When I turned the a/c on, the knocking noise was back and the pulley was wobbling erratically. I thought that the pulley bearing may have collapsed, but upon disassembly I found it was the a/c compressor housing where the pulley bearing sits that was worn. For now I mixed some Permatex Steel Weld and applied it to the worn area on the housing and slid the bearing back on, put it all back together and allowed it to set overnight. It's been a few months now and all is quiet in the a/c department, so hopefully I've dodged that "having to replace the a/c compressor" bullet.

Re: T31 Noisy Air Conditioner Compressor

Hi Eric....glad you found a solution and it's not a short temporary one. My wife and I did a 7,800 km road trip out to Ayers Rock (I still call it that) late last year and soon after our return to Sydney I was hearing what sounded like a worn bearing noise coming from the engine bay. I persevered over the ensuring month but in July (this year) the noise just got louder and louder. The exy was due for a service so I took it to my trusty mechanic in Campbelltown who did a quick on the spot diagnosis and narrowed the noise down to the AC compressor. He advised that he would thoroughly check it out during the service and call me with the test result. As suspected a bearing in the compressor was shot and as it was an inner bearing or something it was not an option to have it repaired. So I advised him to go ahead and order and install a new compressor. The first compressor he received was not the right fit although he had given the supplier the correct model details of the exy. Apparently there a 2 types /models of compressor that fit the T31. Anyway had to wait another day for repairs. The lack of noise now coming from the engine bay was fantastic to the extent that every time I stop the car I think the engine must have stalled. My wife says I am just getting deaf.
I pleased I had the compressor replaced as if I had let the problem go on much later I could have been up for much larger costs as possibly a seized compressor could result in a snapped drive belt etc etc..
Anyway, best of luck with your compressor fix and as your exy is the same year as mine I hope you don't have to have it replaced in the near future. Cheers

Re: T31 Noisy Air Conditioner Compressor

Hi Dave,
That was a great trip you did to Ayers Rock. It's definitely on my to do list. It's good to find the noise and repair it before it lets go, and looking at the amount of wobble on the pulley, you're right, the serpentine belt would have failed and the circlip holding the bearing on could have let go as well. We were down in Wagga when the noise appeared, so I was keen to get home and check it out. I also had to replace the Catalytic Converter, so I'm off to the exhaust section to do a write up there.
Cheers

Re:

Hi

My T30 also seems to have a slight knock when the AC is switched on, may have to look at the Bearing, we have a spare Compressor from the car we are wrecking so may play with this one first. I have repaired my pool pump using a similar product and provided heat is not an issue you may find it's a permanent fix - sometime you can get a sleeve added or go to a larger external bearing - hope mine is only this if at all.
