Correct Use of 2WD, AUTO / 4WD & LOCK modes on a T31

Hi,.

This might seem like a silly question. But i have always wanted to know the correct use of 2WD, AUTO/4WD and LOCK modes. And at what speeds they work at or what speeds they disingage at.

1. On Tarmac / Bitumen or Concrete 50 up to 100 Km/h
2. Sand at various speeds
3. Gravel at various speeds
4. On grass and vegetation at various speeds.

I've heard using incorrect modes can damage the vehicle.

Just after some rules of thumb really.

Others may say different but I mainly use 2WD on the blacktop except after rain when I usely switch to auto in case the road is slippery from the wet. Back to 2WD when roads dry sufficiently. On dirt roads outback I usualy stay on 2WD on recently graded roads but if corrugations, wetness or holes appear I switch to Auto. I have only used 4WD lock once on the beach in soft sand but when the sand firmed a bit and I increased speed the system dropped back to 2WD automatically and I got stuck. I just put the system back into AUTO and crawled out OK with no other assistance. I have not used 4WD lock since and have had many trips on beaches with system left in Auto and of course lowered tyre pressures to suit. So to sum up, mainly 2WD, Auto in wet, slippery or corrugated road conditions and now haven't used 4WD lock for over 7 years. CXheers

I leave mine permanently on auto. I was always forgetting to change it when I got to the dirt sections of our crappy road, plus there's Kuranda Range in the 3 hour trip to the shops...

290,000 km now. There's a few things that need fixing, but the engine and gears are fine.
