Petrol Engine misfires when warm

My 2004 manual-petrol started misfiring when warm about four months ago.

Symptoms:

I drive 50km to work and 50km home each day at around 110kph.
Vehicle starts fine and idles nicely every day.
Vehicle drives and accelerates normally initially.
After around 10-20 minutes of driving at 100-110kph, vehicles misfires.
Misfiring (stutter-surge) usually stops after two minutes to 15 minutes.
Vehicle continues to run normally after misfiring stops.
Engine maint light did not come on until after a month of more of this behaviour.
I have tried driving one-gear down to increase revs but the misfire continues.

I started it for the first time in a month today and took it for a spin. It drove beautifully but the misfire returned at the most-usual ten-minute mark. I had hoped some time in solitary might have given it something to think about emoticon

What's been done previously:

Local mechanic replaced spark plugs. (vehicle did not misbehave for him)
Local mechanic attached fuel pressure gauge and taped to passenger window.
Gauge did not flutter when engine misfired.
Nissan dealer checked for over an hour but could find no cause. (vehicle did not misbehave)
Nissan dealer had second look (engine light now on) but could not definitively find a cause.

Code showed O2 sensor but advice was this was more likely a symptom than a cause.

Both mechanics have strongly hinted that the issue is not worth pursuing as the cost of chasing the problem could be high.

One suggestion was "electronic throttle" - but this means little to me.

I have a rudimentary understanding of things but am not especially mechanically inclined. I am, however, willing to try cheap/simple things if anyone has any suggestions.

Thanks in advance.

So does this only happen after the time at highway speeds ?
Have you driven for the same length of time in normal suburban traffic without this happening ?

Re: Petrol Engine misfires when warm

Hi Kev,

I live in a small town so there really isn't any "normal suburban traffic" around here.

It's a good question though so maybe I should go cruising around town a few dozen times next weekend.

cam and crank sensors are the usual suspects for this behaviour, in fact o2 and mass could contribute too.

Re: Petrol Engine misfires when warm

Two recent non-highway drives suggest the problem still occurs under more "normal" conditions.

With regards to sensors, can I simply disconnect the electrics one at a time to see if the misfire goes away? If it does, I assume this is a pretty solid indicator of where the problem is?

I would get known good cam sensor and coil and then do the elimination process, coz if its not fuel then look to spark.

Re:

Sorry for tardy response.

The car has mostly been parked but when I have driven it, the problem still occurs.

I have no means of borrowing parts so need to know if I can simply disconnect sensors to see if any change occurs. If sensors can be disconnected, does it matter whether the car is running at the time or should the engine be off?

What seems especially weird in the minimal time frame where the problem occurs. Drove it again today and misfire started after about 8-10 minutes driving and lasted for just 1-2 minutes. After this, it ran flawlessly. This occurred on both legs of the trip - morning and evening.

Other than temperature, is there any obvious physical change that could be occurring to cause this narrow band of misfiring? Or is it just another case of electronics having a mind of their own when they aren't working perfectly?

You didn't mention how many kms it has done.

Have you had the injectors cleaned ?
