Cleaning EGR after 120000km with before and after pics


I own a 2012 Diesel TL with a 120k on it.
It was mainly used for long distance driving by previous 2 owners.
I bought it when it had 116k in November 2016

Recently I got a check engine light come on and then it went away by it self after about couple of days.
Not sure what was the problem but I suspected it might be the EGR valve.
Pretty sure it was never cleaned as all the bolts and nuts around the inlet manifold look like they haven't been touched before.

I read about EGR through the forum and thank you Toddy, the write up was very helpful, and as this car was used mainly for long distance driving I didn't expect that the EGR would be so filthy and look for you self it was pretty bad.

I just couldn't believe just how much soot deposit was there.
There was easily 5-6mm of soot on the EGR valve which I had to scrub off with something pretty hard to get it off.
Also the intake manifold was pretty filthy and I tried to clean it as much as I could without taking it apart which would have been a mission and a half to take if off just because of one flipping nut, as I believe Toddy already tried to do that.
I sprayed some carby cleaner in it and cleaned it with a rag but some of it went inside but that didn't bother me too much as I left it to evaporate overnight.

I had some stale petrol which I used to clean everything and to finish it off I used carby cleaner.

There were some spots inside the EGR that I just couldn't clean, it probably would have taken me extra hour to make it spotless but I was satisfied with the result in the end.
By the way, my 4 year old son broke his arm half way through this so it took me 2 days to do everything.

My thoughts on the EGR which I didn't know anything about til now and this is my first diesel vehicle that I ever had.
1. As already many on this forum have said, why isn't EGR cleaning part of the regular maintenance is just ridiculous. Most people who are not mechanically minded and who rely on their mechanics and their dealership for regular servicing will miss this very important issue of EGR because its not stated in the service manual.
2. Why EGR valve goes bad? Because carbon soot is sticky and its just accumulates over time which the solenoid that opens the valve will struggle to eventually open it because it just got glued by the soot. Pretty much the solenoid will burnout from inside and send you a check engine code, my car did and I feared the worst.
3. From the design point of view of the EGR....WHY O WHY is the surface in EGR and intake manifold not extremely smooth....if it had the smooth glassy surface there would definitely be less soot deposits. As I said earlier soot is very sticky and it finds little pockets which helps to build soot deposits. And what about the shape of the pipe, its just asking for soot deposits.
4. Seems Nissan haven't researched this technology long enough to be confident that EGR will last the distance without doing regular maintenance. EGR is a great where the unused diesel is being force back into induction. From petrol cars point of view, we strive to make the intake manifold as smooth as possible and and the air to be less impeded by anything, but looking at my intake manifold on the xtrail is anything but smooth...its filthy.

So I owned the xtrail for 3 months now and traveled 5000km I was guilty of forcing it to go into the 6th gear but thats only when I'm driving steadily between 100-110km and without much acceleration while driving at those speeds. I will probably continue to do that I as will start to clean the EGR every 40000km and then I will probably take off the intake manifold too and clean that aswell.

I only own the xtrail for a very short time so I don't know much about this engine but these are my thoughts and the experience I had with is so far.
My wife and I absolutely love this car and it was a great choice to get diesel in the end especially as it is very economical.
We live on the hills of Wellington, NZ and we get 8l per 100km, and open road under 7 and price for diesel is about $1 at some stations.

not sure why images are not showing up, as they are displayed on my right side when I was writing this.

Anyways here is the link for the photobucket where you can see them all, but how do I fix this issue. I am using Chrome is that an issue maybe?

The inside of manifolds are not smooth as more fuel and waste would stick to a smooth surface. Inlet manifolds would get fuel sticking to them instead of going into the motor where the rougher surface disrupts and keeps it moving, exhausts would get more solids sticking to them. The rougher surface leads to better air flow

I just had the same issue, got my mechanic to clean the EGR, now there is a boost leak with a horrible hissing sound every time the turbo boosts.. back to the mechanic with it emoticon
