Yes, it’s THAT time of year again. No, not Christmas…but close.
For those of us with Garmin Lifetime Map Updates, it’s the release of the shiniest, newest, Australia and New Zealand maps, version 2020.20
All one needs do is logon to your Garmin Express, where you’ll be asked to download the latest version of GE, version 6.16.1.0, and once that’s done connect your Garmin GPS and allow GE to find all of the latest updates.
But take care here. There are a number of updates which you will undoubtedly never, ever need….like ‘Time Zone Maps’ for places like Micronesia, Morocco and Alaska.
Likewise, I doubt our requirement for ‘TrafficProvider.XML’ unless you think you might take your Garmin to the Netherlands and/or Switzerland for a holiday.
Have a read-through of the offerings, simply don’t click on the INSTAL button for the un-necessaries, and download. The download and install of version 2020.20 maps takes around 10-odd minutes.
Oh, and another word of warning. Garmin treats any GPS unit not updated in a 24 month period as no longer working, lost/destroyed, defunct, and removes it from its ‘Up-dateable’ database. Meaning no more free updates, ever.
BTW, I have an Eclipse radio, cd player, GPS, and reversing camera, fitted to my Xtrail (probably by the dealer, pre-sale) and its maps are supplied by Naviextras. I've just looked at updating the on-board maps from Naviextras, and they're asking....wait for it....USD $119.95 (AUD $169.92) for the latest version 2019 Q2. Wonder why I don't use my on-board GPS. :-)
