2004 T30 Ti problems with fuel consumption and idle RPM

Hey X-Trail crew!

Firstly, thanks for such an informative and helpful forum. I've owned my beloved exxy for a few years now and this place has helped me solve a load of smaller issues.

I've got a problem now that has been recurring for a while and I'm not sure of the next steps to take - So I thought I'd reach out to you legends.

I was away and my partners mother had my exxy 'serviced'. The guy was a backyard mechanic and pretty much all he did was change my wiper blades and shove his hand into my throttle body. So when I got home the RPM was sitting on 1500.

My fuel economy has also been terrible, absolutely terrible! I was getting 250km from a full tank (Highway driving, no aircon or towing). I'm now getting around 11L/100km city driving (Haven't tested highway yet).

So far I have done:
- ECU Reset
- Idle Relearn procedure (It brought the RPM in idle down to 600-700ish for a while, until I went for a longer drive and it has now gone back to 1200-1500rpm)
- New Air filter (it was black and horrible) which has helped a little.
- Oil change
- I've read the MIL codes and got 0000, but this was after I did the ECU reset (Stupid!!)

From reading the forum it seems I should: replace O2 sensor, replace cam and crank sensors & chuck in a new fuel filter.

Any other advice for me to fix the fuel economy and this bloody RPM issue?

Car is a 2004 T30 Ti with 190,000km on it.

Thanks in advance!

Re:

Hi Dave

I am new to the X-Trail so still learning but mine is idling to high also and the fuel economy is not good.
I have replaced one of the two O2 Sensors and this partly fixed my problem - the sensor I used was 2nd hand so may also not be so good but basically this sensor tells the ECU what the car is doing in the way of fuel mixture and attempts to keep it at a constant predetermined mixture - the 2nd sensor measures how effective the Cat is working so my guess is look at replacing both as I will be doing once my replacements arrive.
They are 4 wire O2 Sensors and if you are even slightly electrically minded you should be able to just buy generic sensors and refit the plugs / cut wires to suit.
