Re: wanting to lift my t31

How did you go with those spacers Tom? I've gone back to standard all round, but would like to fit these spacers. Curious to see how you went fitting them.

Re: wanting to lift my t31

Eric,

There's some major work I'm about to commence on the suspension and all underside bushes on the exy.

Will take photos along the way and post once complete.

Cheers
Tom

Re: wanting to lift my t31

I contacted a 4x4 suspension specialist who said that for every 10mm of coil spacer installed, it will give approx 17mm of lift at the wheels. Can anyone confirm?

Re: wanting to lift my t31

Eric,

While i'm no specialist, the math doesn't seem to add up.

I would love to know how the calculation works with what you were told by the specialist?

I will be speaking with my mechanic on Friday and will ask the same question to see his reaction and answer.

As with the spring upgrade available for the exy, which gives approx 30mm lift, i measured the final height and managed to get a 25mm lift with KYB front shocks.

I now have a couple of Gabriel shocks sitting in the garage ready for the big day of mods and am keen to see what the final height will be once they are on with the spacers I purchased from Russia.

Will update in the next couple of weeks as i am planning on working on this next weekend.

Re: wanting to lift my t31

He gave me no calculations but I've since seen on various Toyota and Jeep forums, they have the calculations and have an increase in lift at the wheel as well. If you consider for example the rear spring, its inboard from the wheel. I would think that by the time that 20mm extended out from the spring to the wheel, it would increase. I could be wrong. Unless the spacer is less than 20mm thick but giving that lift at the wheel. Keen to see how you go as I will order some as well. Cheers.

Re: wanting to lift my t31

Hi All,

I had almost started to put the spacers in only to realise i have been sent the wrong design.
I have the t30 not t31 spacers for the front and t31 for rear.

i have tried to get in contact with the seller and still waiting on reply.

In the mean time, I have engaged a laser cutting specialist to cut out several 10mm steel spacers that i can use for the front.

If the calcs are correct and for every 10mm i get approx 17mm, using 2 plates should give me approx 30mm.

If this is the case then this will be my legal lift limit as i already have gaines 25mm from the king springs.

If this works out, I will work out if CV boots will be affected too much or not.
Then I will work out the rear shocks as they will need to be 30mm longer.

stay tuned...

Re: wanting to lift my t31

I would have expected the fronts of the T31 to be the same as the T30 as both use the MacPherson struts. It is only the rears which were changed from struts on the T30 to separate shock+spring in the T31.

Just check the part numbers with Nissan for the front struts on the T30 and T31 to be sure.
I know they both use the same hub nut and a few other parts as I used the hub nut retainer from a T31 on my T30 after checking the part numbers of both hub nuts.

Re: wanting to lift my t31

Kev,

While the majority of the strut is the same, the major difference is the strut plate.

For anyone reading this and not sure what this is, it is the top plate of the strut holding the spring in place.

The T30 has a nice and symmetrical 3 bolt layout, the T31 had to be different.
The T31 has an offset bolt layout. This is why the spacers I was supplied didn't work.

Now for the update;
I have now had my strut spacers cut out from 10mm G450 steel.
I must admit that my design drawing was a little tight and a grinder had to be used to take of some of the internal edge.
I then marked out the 3 holes and used a 7mm drill for a pilot hole, then a 13mm drill to enlarge the hole and make it easier to work with.

I have now fitted both 10mm spacers and surprisingly i have gained almost 20mm on each side of the car.

Eric, your information was spot on.

I have had a look at the CV boots and there isn't much I can do to stop them from rubbing, they were rubbing after the spring upgrade so perhaps a non standard boot that has better design for this purpose in the near future.

I haven't started on the rear as yet, but would love to in the coming months.

Stay tuned...

Re: wanting to lift my t31

Guys,

Just an updated on the lift kit i created.

I have noticed a small wobble coming from the front end which was not there before.
Makes me think that the CV has been angled to its limit.

I have checked with my local tyre power that the tyres are balanced and the alignment is correct.

Not sure if it is worth leaving these spacers in if they are creating long term damage.

Would conclude that there is no lift kit available except for the longer springs for the T31 exy!

Re: wanting to lift my t31

Hi all,

I have had a re-check with the spacers i created as the original outcome was not satisfactory.

I came to the conclusion that the CV should angle out ok with a 15mm lift. This is using a single 10mm steel spacer plate.

After much research and some DIY with CV boots on the original CV shafts, i came to the conclusion that the exy can in fact be lifted safely and within working limits of CV boots available on ebay.

Thank you to Eric for the original post in which he identifies the below CV boots as suitable;
Febest Inner Boot 0115-GSX30RHT 84x85x26.5 , Febest Outer Boot 0217P-J1020 84.5x108x28.3.

These boots are not an exact replacement as Nissan genuine but are the correct size for the CV.
The important factor is the ribbing rings are set farther apart and this is what will help in the long run.

I have now achieved a 45mm lift from the original height of the exy. This included the higher king springs and a custom spacer between the strut plate and car body as well as a new set of KYB shocks which helped stabilise the lot.

I then had the car aligned again and there is no wobble or feedback from the front end.

I must mention i have fitted new tie rods, stabiliser bars, bushes to the control arm, and bushes to the sway bar.

It has been a journey but well worth it.

I no longer bottom out at my regular beach outings when we go fishing and that car is full of gear.
