may need some help diagnosing a "whirr"

scratching my head on this noise im experiencing.
noise is a whirr or a gear noise. like your front loader washing machine but not as high pitched or extreme. anyone whatch the top gear alfa special where clarksons car dropped a box bearing?
noticed it in an underground bunnings carpark at night with the windows down (i needed floor polish at 8pm...)
i thought the noise was engine speed specific as when i hold it in gear the whirr changes pitch with engine revs. when i free rev the engine no noise. if im rolling in neutral and free rev the engine noise does not change pitch but then the noise is still there and dependent on road speed.
awd and lock does not change the noise.
it sounds like it is left hand front (trans)
when looking at it the other week i noticed the left front cv boot had exploded throwing grease everywhere. changes the driveshaft thinking it may have been cv. nope sound is still there.
not too familiar with cvts but expecting it to be a bearing in there that has gone kaput.
thoughts?
btw its a series 1 t31 ti 110 000kns
self services
flawless otherwise.

Slipry,

It sounds a little like the noise from the cvt.

Any chance you could record the noise and post to hear the exact problem?

Hi Slipry, did you ever find an answer to your problem?
I've got a similar noise in my s5 t31, and I'm thinking its likely the cvt (haven't looked any further than this thread, so not sure).

Would love to know if you got yours sorted

Cheers
