Re: AC service advice

Thanks for the tip Kev. Another car of mine needs a compressor and I was quoted over $1,000 to replace it. I'll definately be calling them for a quote .

Cheers

Re: AC service advice

Thank you all for the information on ACs. These units are very expensive to recondition or replace here in Rio de Janeiro too. Unlike a fridge, the refrigerant gas leaks out over time, so a refill is the commonest maintenance task.
Regarding very hot (sun temp. 40C.+) weather, if your roof is a dark colour (mine's black, the worst), you might want to consider spraying it white or installing an upper roof panel with a space for air to flow through (in my case, the sunroof precludes the idea), as seen on many Land-Rover Defenders.
Also, after back-blowing the AC outlets on my T30 that has never had a cabin filter since manufacture in 2007, I'm considering not using a very fine filter, as it would restrict the air flow too much.
Any other ideas on keeping cool would be most welcome.

Re: AC service advice

Hi guys

I just purchased my first xtrail yesterday, a 2010 T31 petrol auto. The one thing wrong with it was the air on didn't work. It blew air out but it was warm, even after a 20 minute test drive.

The dealer assured me they would fix it when they did the roadworthy cert needed for sale.

I've put a deposit down and plan to pay the rest this week sometime when I go to pick it up after it's had the roadworthy and air on done.

What should I be looking for ? Just turn it on and feel for cold air? Is there a chance the compressor could be rooted but they could fudge it for the sale with a quick regass? Just don't wanna get ripped off and end up with a $1000 job straight off the bat with my lovely new car.

Thanks

Dave

Re: AC service advice

Hi Dave,

All cars purchased from a dealer have some warranty usually around 3 months or more for second-hand ones, so if it does fail after a few weeks then they should replace it for you under that warranty. Just ask them about the warranty period before you purchase and specifically mention the aircon compressor to make sure it is covered.

Also, there are new compressors from a place in Qld much cheaper than from a dealer and fitting by a mechanic is not costly. Search the forum for my thread about it.

Re:

Simple test (if you don't have a thermometer)...two person job:

Turn the car on, and have second person looking at the clutch on the A/C (visible when looking from above in the engine bay). Whilst they are looking, push the A/C button. They should see the clutch spin. If it's not cooling, then maybe a re-gas will be sufficient (assuming there's no leaks).

Cheers,
Mark

Re:

BTW, the clutch coils on T31s are repairable...had my wife's car's repaired yesterday for $140 and all is good again! Thinking of a service too as the car hasn't been getting as cold as it used to...maybe due the the heat wave we are having!

Re: AC service advice

I had similar issue with my T31 MY12 STL. Even though with ventilation for the back seat passengers, the cabin was not cool after 2 or more hours of driving. The air flow was strong as I set the temperature to the lowest possible, but the air coming out from the front vents felt like 25 DegC - at least it was not warm air! Outside temperature was in excess of 35 DegC and I was driving mostly on highways.

Suspecting that it could be low on gas, I had an aircon mechanic look at it during a lunch stop over. He started working on it only after the car has stopped for an hour. $50 later, he advised me that the gas pressure was fine, air from the vent was 5 DegC, and that aircon efficiency can be improved but setting the fan speed at medium (not Auto as I had it) - reason being slower air speed gives more time for the air to cool down while passing through the condenser emoticon I continued the journey for another 1.5 hours with a more comfortable cabin.

Not happy with the mechanic's explanation - as I had previously owned a Murano and Subaru Liberty both of which had very efficient air con for hot to very hot days - I had my own air con mechanic look into the 'problem' on my return to Sydney. He measured the air from the vent at 1 DegC !! The car had stopped overnight, and he looked at the car the next morning. He said air con is working fine. His explanation is that the air con is way too efficient, and this could have caused icing within the system and that air flows around the ice emoticon. I thought if this is so, then the airflow will be weaker but it was not the case.

A member's explanation about the issue being caused by use of new air con gas sounds better than both the mechanics! I still suspect it has something to do with the air con clutch working not so well in extremely hot weather but I was asked to 'reproduce' the problem before the mechanic can diagnose it!
