Airbag Sensor won't turn off even after reset. What do I do ?

Hi guys

I have a 2011 X-Trail 2WD ST CVT and couple of days ago the missus ran onto the curb turning a
corner. She hit the rear passenger side of the car. Car was only going about 20km/h or so. There seems no damage at all but the airbag warning light is on and flashes. Looking up the procedure on this forum I reset the light and it was fine for about half a day. The next morning the light is back emoticon This means that whatever the issue is it's not fixed. Where is the airbag sensors? Can I fix this myself? I don't wanna fork out hundreds of bucks just for a sensor and a reset which is what I assume and electrician or Nissan would charge. Advice welcome emoticon

Hi Mate,

If you have followed the airbag sensor re-set procedure and it hasn't worked, it means there is a more serious problem exists and being airbag related I wouldn't go about saving Dollars and take it direct to the dealer to trouble-shoot to make sure no safety is compromised.

Yeah it's being sent to a repairer. RMS said the car is basically unroadworthy. Happily I added car hire in my policy. But like you said it's safety that's involved so you don't make compromises.

Re: Airbag Sensor won't turn off even after reset. What do I do ?

Hi Nathan,

Here is the airbag flashing light reset method:

1. Turn the key from off to on.
2. Watch the airbag light closely. It will stay on for a few secs. and then as soon as it blinks off (the start of the flashing), turn the key off instantly.
3. Count to 5 (1 Mississippi, 2 Mississippi . . . .)
4. Repeat steps 1-3 two more times until you have done the cycle three times.
5. Now turn the key on and watch the light. It will start blinking in a different, slower manner. This is diagnostic mode. You can watch this for a little while, no hurry.
6. Now turn the key off again, Count to 5 like in step 3 again, and turn back on. If the procedure worked, the airbag light will not be flashing.

You need to be very precise with the timing, so I suggest you use a stop-watch.
