Re:
I dont know about you guys?
Why so much empasis on speed and getting moving ?
My first car was a Morris Minor 1000
thats a 1000 cc engine in a body as heavy as the x trail.
No fuel injection, just a crappy old carby, which sometimes worked.
No disc brakes , just drum brakes that faded quite readilly
No syncro in first or reverse, and in my case none in second either.
Max top speed, with a good tail wind........80klm/hr downhill
Acceleration...............eventually, I think it was 0-60klm/hr in about 5 minutes
Fuel consumption, great.........for the petrol stations.
It had a 5 gallon tank that I filled evey week, I only drove 5 klm to and from work and a little bit of running around on the weekends.
The x trail is a sports car in comparison
The best thing about the Morris was it was easy to work on.
You could even climb into the engine bay with the motor.
Cheers

Re: X-Trail T31 - CVT transmission
Add mine to the list of CVT failures. It has 178,173km on the clock. (2010 Ti)
The first indication was the orange engine light came on. My wife has been the regular driver for the past year and is not the best at describing car issues. I took it for a run at the weekend when she told me the X-Trail was playing up and found no apparent drive issue so it was off to the local Nissan service department during the week to have the code read. In the meantime the light goes out (but my wife says nothing!). The service guys read the code and advise "engine misfire". Possible plug failing or bad fuel but still no noticeable drive issue. About a week later, I am in the X-Trail and the issue manifest itself. The engine is over revving with no real acceleration and the orange check engine light comes on. Now I understand the issue and I'm really concerned. However, I notice the check engine light has gone out when I hop in the X-Trail to take it back to the service department but I can't make it come back on during the short drive to Nissan. Anyway, I can now properly describe the problem. Later I get a phone call. The CVT is shot. A new one is about $8,000 so I am advised to try a nominated local auto place for a reconditioned CVT which will be around $5,000.
It's a 7/8 year old vehicle with nearly 200,000km on the clock. I don't think it's worth fixing but it has been a good vehicle. The nominated auto place is closed over the Christmas/New Year break so I don't have a proper quote for the reconditioned CVT. If I replace the X-Trail, the new car will not have a CVT! I know this limits my options.

Re:
I had to do a lot of work earlier in the year on Jatco CVT's when the Suzuki we bought threw a 'Low Fluid Pressure' code within 24 hours of buying the vehicle, and the used car dealership refused to do anything about it. There was no way I was going to be stuck with a high milage (120,000kms) 2012 model CVT that was throwing low fluid pressure codes rondomly. (I got a full refund plus costs in court!)
ATSG has very good info on the JF011E and JF015E
This is the last place I dealt with for pricing and information about CVT rebuilds that I was inclined to believe was giving me good advice.
CVT.Co.NZ
There was another shop here in town 'AutoTorque', but he didn't want to get involved in a court case. But he seemed to know about the JF015E.
Also, there is a ton of information out there on how early CVT's didn't live up to Nissan's expectations, and they worked with Jatco to design the "CVT7" JF015E to be a much more reliable unit. Nissan know the JF011E CVT is not a good unit, but they aren't going to do anything because there's not much they can do except replace it with another new 'bad' unit which may just as likely fail again.
For example:
Jatco & Nissan develop a new CVT
Nissan presses Jatco to end CVT glitches
If you want OEM Nissan CVT fluid, try Garry at Nizbits. That's where I'll be buying the CVT fluid for the Suzuki from as it's the same JF015E as used in the new Nissans. I'll be changing the fluid every 30,000-40,000 depending on how it looks.
DO NOT let anyone put Castrol Transmax CVT 'Gold' in your CVT. Even the Penrite CVT fluid has changed formulation and is better, but still not quite right. Talk to any CVT rebuilder and ask them what fluid is in most of the dead transmissions they get! It's nearly always Castrol 'Gold', or something else that shouldn't have been put in.
Oh, and I too have been given the whole "Sealed unit for life, no servicing" bullshit from Dealers. That's because they can't access the service information, parts, or fluid, and the only option listed in their 'troubleshooting' guide is "Replace entire transmission". Yeah, umm, NO!
