how to make your tired and cloudy fog lights look like new for all X-Trails
Hi all,
Being a new owner of a T30 exxy I was appalled at the state of the foggies, and I’m sure there may be a few of you that are equally just with the state of your cloudy, faded fogs across all iterations of the X-Trail.
Follow my steps here, and I’ll have them looking like new in no time.
Heres what you’ll need
-dirty foggies
-600 grit, 1200 grit and 2000 grit wet and dry sand paper
-tub of water
-Meguiars “Plastx”
-spray can of clear coat
-WD40
-heater and hair dryer
-some old rags
-some microfibre cloths
-1.5 hours
Ok. First lets start with a before pic.
Step1 -
] [/URL]
get your 600 grit and soak a piece in your tub of water, make sure you always keep the papers that you’re using wet as it acts as a lubricant.
Take your time here, and you don’t need to apply too much pressure, you’re just wanting to get that initial brown muck off.
don’t go in circular motions, just back and forth, then turn 90 degrees on your second run and sand back again.
It’ll look like this at this point.
]
Remember to wipe with a clean side of a rag after each pass WITH ALL STAGES OF THE DIFFERENT GRITS, because as you go to the finer grits you don’t want residue from the rougher ones scratching up the next step
Step2- repeat this process and complete the 2000grit pass.
It’ll look like this at this point
Step3-
Use a microfiber cloth and rub this compound in vigourously. 1 pass will do, and be sure to completely rub off all excess.
Step 4-
Might seem counter intuitive, but spray some WD40 on the foggies at this point. The Plastx is water based and the WD40 will displace the water, before you spray on your clear coat. Make sure to dry thoroughly with hair dryer
Please don’t forget this step because if you try to spray on the clear, it wont adhere uniformly, and you’ll end up having to start from step 1 again. I learned the hard way.
You will start to see results and it should look like this now
Step 5-
]
Spray 2 even coats of your clear. 1st pass in one direction 2nd pass 90 degrees to it so its nice and even.
If you have a heater, let the foggies sit in front of it for around half an hour.
don’t touch it while its curing and still tacky or you will have to sand back again. Can’t stress this enough!
It’ll look like this now
]
Step 6- polish again with the Meguiars Plastx once it is dry to the touch to smooth out the clear coat.
][
Step 7- spray some WD40 again and buff off, then apply last coat of clear and let dry.
Step 8- enjoy your As new foglights !
The same process can be used for your headlights.
