Thanks.

I got the O ring through Nissan, have a look at my two posts above yours with part numbers and details.

All still holding up well and no more oil leak!

Cheers

I have had a small oil leak for a couple of months and today I decided to put the car on ramps, and found the oil cooler leaking.

So let me get this right the 2 seals I need for the square oil cooler are 21304-JA00A & 21304-JA06A

Thanks for the part numbers re: t31.

I went through my local nissan spare parts who were absolutely useless. Managed to school him on the right part numbers. Said he could get the parts from Japan, not overnight but in 4 to 5 weeks. Found genuine items on ebay via us (altima and sentra) for a little more but max 2 weeks away sent priority.

The stench of burning synthetic is too much for a 5 week delay...

Happy to post results.

One more tbing. Is it worth puting some silastic on the cooler mating surfaces? Will this prohibit the ability to properly "sandwich" the plates, or is the o ring sufficient (as it is designed this way but fails).

Correct, as per photos on previous post.

I wouldnt use silastic. If your surfaces are clean, dry and smooth it should seal fine.

Cheers

Re: fixing an oil cooler leak

Managed to change out the o ring and gasket

Fiddly but easy job to do and NO LEAKS

As per Artymr2's post below I kept the coolant lines attached.

there were 2 issues in doing this

1 I had caked on old oil varnish between the sandwich plates that needed cleaning. a thumbnail and carby clean got it but it was a bit painful. added a bit of time to the job

2 is cracking the 4 bolts for the sandwich plate if you take the cooler off the block first is again difficult - doable but painful nonetheless

I didn't want to drop all my coolant so I did it that way. I would suggest taking it out completely will make life much easier, but I only recently did an entire coolant flush.

thanks for the info on here guys, saved me a good $500 in parts alone and all it took was 2 hours, a few rags, $40 part from over seas, can of carby clean, and a loss of about 100mm of oil

also sandwich plate bolts are 10mm and block bolts are 12mm

Re:

Good work! Interesting info. On mine I found the 4 bolts quite loose (Compressed o ring took of tension). The top plate was quite clean, a wipe with metho and it was like new.

I did use one of those o ring ratchet spanners with flexible end (flips 90 degrees to spanner) which made it easy. Using normal spanners or sockets would be a pain.

Cheers

posticon Re: fixing an oil cooler leak

I had a slow oil leak in my X-trail for years. Turns out it was the oil cooler. This leak can be a little bit tricky to spot. It seems to have a habit of leaking quickly on start up, then stopping when the engine warms up.

With the car on stands, the drivers wheel and the wheel arch splash guard removed, it was not difficult to put a 17mm ratchet spanner on the oil cooler top bolt and tighten it up a bit. More torque was available with the engine warm. This stopped the leak for a couple of days but it had to come out.

Nissan quoted me over $1267 for the oil cooler assembly, but they sold me the engine block gasket for around $10 (part 21304).

I got the two O-rings from Seal Innovations. The large one was 7mm X 74mm outside diameter (OD), and the small one at the top was 3.5mm X 23mm OD. The previous posts suggest 6mm X 75mm and that would be probably fit better.

With the four 12mm engine block bolts removed, the oil cooler could be tilted to allow the top hoses to be removed, and then out it came. The new o-rings and the engine gaskets went in without sealant. I held the oil cooler in a wood vice to get some tension on the top bolt.
If you reinstall it like I did, you will forget to put the water hoses on first, bolt the oil cooler up nice and tight, then take it off again, put the hoses on and reassemble. emoticon Whew!

It took a couple of days of city driving for the oil cooler to start leaking oil again. A little bit of oil began seeping from the engine gasket as well. Re-tensioning was easy and hopefully no more leaks!

Thanks everyone for the tips.

Re: fixing an oil cooler leak

Hi All,
I had the T-31 oil cooler leak a year ago, bought the "O ring" and seal on E-Bay from USA and got my mechanic to fit them which stopped the leak. Now it is leaking again and I had to make the trip from Adelaide to Sydney towing my Jayco Penguin camper, so I'm back now having left a litre of oil in spots along the way.
So the seals (Ebay US $18.62) and a Chinese replacement oil cooler ( Ebay $55 ) have arrived and I'll probably get my mechanic to fit them again, as he can clean off the oil all over the bottom of the car better than I.
I'm wondering if this leak is cured by just tightening the bolts holding the cooler to the engine block, as one of the posts said was a temporary fix, and another said was possible when the engine was warm.
Or is the leak at "O-ring" plate?
Can the sealing surfaces be warped by tightening too much?
I can't believe the gasket and O-ring can harden/fail in a year - what is happening here?

Re: fixing an oil cooler leak

so my 2010 engine oil cooler finally decided to do the leaking thing ... rather more than just a weep tho... dumped a couple of cup fulls on the drive way while I was away at work ..luckily the mother in law noticed it all on the driveway before my missus drove off! .

..RH front wheel off .. and oil filter plastic guard removed..- quick look confirmed it was the engine oil cooler to blame ..so I set about getting it off. As others have testified..it is a pain ..but very do-able with patience. working with my head in the RH front wheel arch, reaching in behind the engine block. I removed the assy from the engine block first so as to twist it around to get to the coolant hoses. This obviously dumps a load of coolant but mine was due a change so no drama. Getting to the hoses clamps without removing the assy from the block was just damn impossible...

anyway.. after removing hose clamps and hoses & allowing coolant to drain ..the assy unbolts from the block easily and comes out thro the space in the RH wheel arch.

Getting hold of the replacement gasket & o ring was gonna be a pain..living where I do. I didnt even try the local (1.5hr away) Nissan dealer ... experience tells me it would be a pointless exercise. So.. ordered the 2 items on PartsSouq, UAE .. AND some genuine bits from eBay US also .... and then..I noticed some dodgy Chinese copies available on 'Shopee'... pretty big in South East Asia..not sure if they exist in Aus tho. For a total of $US5 ..yes..FIVE ... I got both the o ring.. and the steel gasket.. crazy.

They arrived this morning.. 4 days from ordering..so I got them fitted, coolant replaced..and started up. Amazing.. all tight! .. not a drip... well happy.

Im not too convinced those Chinese parts will be that long lasting however.. so I'm glad I have the genuine stuff on the way .. pretty sure I could do the whole swap in a couple of hrs 2nd time around if I have to.

For anyone contemplating this fix... access looks to be horrendous at first glance.. but it really is not so bad.. all done from RH front wheel arch with patience and dexterity.

Will update later as to the longevity of the Chinese parts .... fings crossed.
