Re: Tappet noise on cold startup

Anyhoo. I put about half a litre of 'Lucas' upper cylinder oil lubricant,(Supercheap Auto $25) in the engine and it dramatically lessened the rattle on start-up and the engine also seemed to run alot smoother and quieter. I've put this stuff in many cars engines, diffs and gearboxes with success..
Did you mean the "Oil stabiliser", or "oil lubricant"? I ask because it appears that the oil lubricant is a fuel system additive that goes through the injectors or carby, and the oil stabiliser is an oil additive.
As you say you've used it with success in diff & gearboxes, I assume you meant the stabiliser, but I just wanted to make sure.
I've used different viscosities of oil in my T30 (from 5W-30 to 20W-50), and at the moment I'm using the only mineral 5W-30 I can find, which is Penrite from Autobarn. It's still happening at startup for a second or two, and it's killing me as the knock sensor is stalling the engine, and then it takes 15 seconds of winding it over to start after that.
It's not the tensioner pads, as after it starts it sounds great. It's only the cold start-up that's a problem, and it's much worse now the temperatures are colder (June as I write this).
I have swapped the tensioner with another I have here, as I wreck out XTrails and have the parts, but the symptoms are the same, so I'm at a stage where I'm considering putting a replacement spring in there, or adding a spacer to the end of the tensioner piston as per this youtube vid:

I look forward to your reply as to the oil stabiliser question.
Cheers,
