Re: Tappet noise on cold startup

Thanks for the replies. I wasn't aware that it was that common.

It is just a shame that a once quiet engine is now noisy (when starting).

My concern is that it appeared after the service, so to me it must be the result of what was done during the service.

I will talk to the guys in the workshop a bit more and I will let you know what I find out.

The mechanics did suggest trying different grades of oil so I will see how that turns out.

Does anyone know the spec on the running in oil?

HI guys,
I noticed the tappet noise while pulling on incline after a cold start.
Its more noticeable around 1800-2200 RPM range, that's when i change gears.
The noise has slightly lessened after oil change however its not gone.

As some members said the noise disappears after a few seconds, but thats not happening in this case it may take full 2-3 mins before this goes away.

Hornsby Nissan service has advised me to leave the car overnight for a cold test.
Lets see when I get time to leave my car.

Re: Tappet noise on cold startup

Im still running Penrite Running in oil in my T30. The rattle on start up is very evident. I was worried that the timing chain would skip a tooth when cold and loose.

IMO. It has to be fairly normal. All the engine oil is sitting in the sump and is drawn up the front cover via gear driven pump on ignition. The oil is sucked into various parts in the engine and in particular the Timing chain tensioner which is hydraulically assisting the spring that will put full oil pressure on that small tensioner piston and then on to the timing chain guide rails..(Hope that sort of makes sense).

Anyhoo. I put about half a litre of 'Lucas' upper cylinder oil lubricant,(Supercheap Auto $25) in the engine and it dramatically lessened the rattle on strat-up and the engine also seemed to run alot smoother and quieter. Ive put this stuff in many cars engines, diffs and gearboxes with success..

Did you mean the "Oil stabiliser", or "oil lubricant"? I ask because it appears that the oil lubricant is a fuel system additive that goes through the injectors or carby, and the oil stabiliser is an oil additive.

As you say you've used it with success in diff & gearboxes, I assume you meant the stabiliser, but I just wanted to make sure.

I've used different viscosities of oil in my T30 (from 5W-30 to 20W-50), and at the moment I'm using the only mineral 5W-30 I can find, which is Penrite from Autobarn. It's still happening at startup for a second or two, and it's killing me as the knock sensor is stalling the engine, and then it takes 15 seconds of winding it over to start after that.

It's not the tensioner pads, as after it starts it sounds great. It's only the cold start-up that's a problem, and it's much worse now the temperatures are colder (June as I write this).

I have swapped the tensioner with another I have here, as I wreck out XTrails and have the parts, but the symptoms are the same, so I'm at a stage where I'm considering putting a replacement spring in there, or adding a spacer to the end of the tensioner piston as per this youtube vid:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eR82_0Kic6Y

I look forward to your reply as to the oil stabiliser question.

Cheers,
Syd

Hey Syd, yes definitely the oil stabaliser, add it to the oil Fill point. It seems to work for some situations.

Re: Tappet noise on cold startup

I had the same issue after a change using the Penrite 5W30 Enviro. Shortly afterwards had it in with Nissan for the dreaded DPF error. Part of the Forced Burn process is an oil change with "Nissan Oil" - came back nice and quiet. My best guess is they use 0W30 at Nissan which would make for better cold start function. I have since used Mobil 5W30 and although not as noticable as with the Penrite, the rattle is back. Next step is to try 0W30 (Oil change due in about 6 weeks). I'll try to remember to report back my results.

Re: Tappet noise on cold startup

Hi, a strange sound is heard on the left side of the engine. Where is the accessory belt and distribution. I changed the tensioner roller and the guide roller from the accessories. It wasn't from there. I checked the alternator, needle compressor and water pump. The bearings are ok. It only does this when the engine is cold for 3-5 minutes. When it's hot, you can't hear anything at all. The engine works ok. The car has only 90,000 km.
