Unexpected Power loss

Hi everyone.

I have a 2004 X-trail with about 135,000 kms. It has a petrol engine and an automatic transmission. It's been almost 2 months now that my exy has been experiencing intermittent power losses when accelerating and when the rev counter is between 1000 rpm and 3000 rpm. The loss of power feels like I have let go of the accelerator yet it is still depressed. During the time that power is lost, flooring the accelerator pedal eliminates this problem. The car is still able to reach high speeds (e.g. 160km/h) as before the problem appeared. There is no check engine light.

Since this problem appeared, I have done the following:
1) Changed the CAM and Crank position sensors.
2) Changed Oil + oil filter
3) Changed Spark plugs - which when checked recently have some oil or maybe fuel on the threads for cylinder 2 and 4.
4) Changed air filter

Your assistance and advice is highly appreciated.
Thanks in advance.

Re: Unexpected Power loss

Try cleaning the MAF sensor too.

Have you noticed any increase in fuel consumption ?

Re:

Thanks for the suggestion. I will clean it and report back.
Yes, there is a slight increase in fuel consumption.

Re: Unexpected Power loss

The other thing to change is the O2 sensor.

If the fuel consumption continues to increase and the power continues to decrease then the next suspect is a stretched timing chain, especially if the engine seems to have more vibrations than normal.

Re: Unexpected Power loss

I have cleaned the MAF sensor with some Liqui moly maf sensor cleaner.
Also cleaned the throttle body and reset the ecu. The car still intermittently surges at low rpms.
Lately it has began to idle erratically after about an hour drive. However, the idling is perfectly fine before driving.
My mechanic pointed out maybe I have a soft failure on the ignition coil(s).
Is there a way to test the O2 sensor to determine if it is really gone? I got a pricey quote for it at my local nissan dealership.

Your mechanic can measure the voltage output of the sensor to see if it is within specs both when cold and after you have driven it for an hour so that it is hot.

Chaged the O2 sensor with a bosch universal one. The car runs great. emoticon Thank you so much for your advice. emoticon

I however feel like the car has slightly more vibrations when idling in D (or when stopping at a robot with the gear in D). When the gear is in P or N it is very smooth ... i.e. No vinrations. When driving it is also very smooth. No unusual vibrations. Lastly, is it normal for the rev counter not to back down when releasing the accelerator pedal when the car is cruising in 4th gear (last gear). Or this only happens with gears 1,2 and3 only?

Re: Unexpected Power loss

When you release the accelerator with an automatic transmission it effectively changes down to the highest gear it can select (4th in your case with overdrive enabled). So when in 4th it cannot change to a higher gear and so the revs will not instantly drop.

Re:

Hi Guys,

I have a similar issue on my auto 04 x-trail.

If I manually change gears (start in 1, then 2, then D) it accelerated OK but there is still a dead spot between 1000-3000RPM but if I leave it in D and its more noticeable.

I changed plugs, did oil change etc. but it has been doing it since I got it with 160,000k's.

Dads 2002 model seems SOOOO much better in acceleration, almost twitchy like its on crack.

Do you think the o2 may be the issue? it belonged to an old guy in Sydney before me.

Its really bad when say im cruising at 60 then want to merge onto the freeway and I dont go anywhere until over 3500ish and i take off.
