T31 Blower intermittent operation.

Car is providing intermittent power to the fan switch.

I have had issues with the blower not running sometimes and others running fine on each fan level. I first removed the glove box and checked the connection to the blower which was fine but I wasn't getting any power registering and it's darn hard to test the connection with just the standard poles provided with the multimeter.
I removed the radio fascia and unplugged the switch. Initially the power wasn't here. Then I turned it on again and the power was there. As seen in the video power is there for 5-6 turns of the key. Then it stopped, no power coming through. Fuses are fine.
An auto-elec mate suggested getting a wiring diagram but I haven't had time yet to check if our ESM has a wiring diagram but if anyone has one they could provide or any ideas please let me know.

Re: T31 Blower intermittent operation.

Since you have an ST it could be the manual fan speed switch having an intermittent contact from age or a fan speed resistor on its way out.
Yes, the ESM has full wiring diagrams along with instructions on how to access and remove all components.

Re:

It's definitely not the fan switch - if you're referring to the fan speed selector switch.
The ESM seems to have a diagram and diagnostics for an Automatic Air Conditioner but not for the manual one in an ST. From what I recall reading in the other threads the ST doesn't have an Auto Amp?

Can and direct me to the relay for the T31 ST blower? I didn't see it in the wiring diagram and have not read in the other thread where it keeps that be located.

Re:

My mechanic has quoted about $900 for a blower and resistor replacement. Does anyone know the part numbers for a 2009 T31 ST? I rang my local Nissan dealer and their policy is to not give out part numbers.
I searched the forum and I have found part numbers but I don’t think they’re for a T31 ST, only TI model or T30. Help me save some money please!

Re: T31 Blower intermittent operation.

I managed to remove my fan control amplifier - what I believe that people call a resistor, or it has the resistor on there.
The interesting thing is mine doesn't look like the T31 one, white with a square-ish plug. Mine is like the T30 version, black and long. I've ordered it from my local Nissan for $82.50. Just to be safe that I am getting the right part. Hopefully I haven't shot myself in the foot and accidentally ordered the wrong part.

I also managed to remove the blower. The little clip you're supposed to pull out before you turn hurt. I got quoted like $550 for the assembly. I will likely try to find one online. I was also intending to do the bearing replacement found on the T30 blower thread. Not so hard to get to and remove. Putting it back might be a problem, I'm pretty big and the space is pretty small.

:edit: found the motor assembly part number here in the forums, my part number is the same, managed to get it from Nissan.

Re: T31 Blower intermittent operation.

Hi,
I've just solved an intermittent blower problem on my T31 ST 2.5litre 2011 CVT Front wheel drive.
I removed the fan & motor and connected with a pair of jumper wires that I made up to fit the plug and socket. Set the fan in the passenger footwell (fan axis pointing up obviously). Everything fine - 4 speeds, AC worked etc
Refitted the blower/motor in the housing. Nothing.
Remove, test in footwell, fine. Refit sometimes it would run when first fitted but then not run after turning off and on. Sometimes it would run until I just pushed it home in the housing so I thought there might be a clearance problem.

Then I removed fan, connected jumpers and held the fan axis point down. Started first time. When I turned the now-running fan till axis pointed upwards and it stopped. Turn axis down, motor started, up nothing.

There is about 1-2 mm axial play on the fan shaft. With the fan pushed hard against the motor, everything was fine. The slightest movement of the fan away from the motor and clearly the brushes were not making contact.

A good wash with WD40 via the motor 'inspection port' on the motor has cured the problem for now.

Thanks for the info Neil.
Do you think the WD40 worked to lubricate any rubbing parts ?

It makes me wonder if your bearing is getting worn, hence the play in the shaft.

Re: T31 Blower intermittent operation.

The fan uses impregnated bearings, so oil on them will harm them beyond the short term. Dirt can contaminate them over time, but after a short time the dirt will lodge in the bearing surface and then wear the shaft, causing play.

If the motor is stopping on a 10 year old car, its time to change the motor for sure.

Alwasy worth changing blower motor fans as they do wear out before the car does and also can be a fire hazard once they begin jamming, as not all scenarios will result in enough shorted current to burn the fuse before heating the feed wire beyond the melting point of the insulation.

Re: T31 Blower intermittent operation.

Hi everybody
WD40 fix last about a week. Bought a new blower and motor unit from Korean Parts Warehouse in NSW ([email protected]) for $145. Seems like good value. Exact part fit. Only problem now is that I am blowing the blower fuses. When I run the new blower on the bench with a 12V battery, it is pulling about 4 1/2 amps. Blower fuses are 15 amp. Is the start up surge current blowing the fuse or do I have a problem somewhere else?

Why are there two blower fuses (both 15 amp)?

Can anyone point me to a wiring diagram?

Thanks & Regards
Neil
