Hi Jacob,
You haven't said how frequent your 40min trips will be. If the majority of your trips are the short, low speed ones and the 40min trip is only every couple of weeks or less then I'd probably consider getting a patrol model, unless you are regularly getting your RPM up over 2000 or have a mechanic who can do forced burns on a regular basis. Alternatively do some of your short trips in a lower gear to get your RPM up over 2000, even as high as 3-4000rpm for at least 10 mins. The trick to not having the DPF foul really is in keeping the RPMs higher and/or longer trips, undulating areas are particularly good.
I've done just under 200k kms (in a bit over 6 years) in my 2010 TL and have never had an issue, but I have done a lot of open road driving where the taco regularly sits on or above the 2000RPM mark and I do drive through the gears around town.
I agree with John that if the diesel is for you then the TL is definitely worth the extra cash.

Could be an issue depending on which service was missed, but I'd be looking more at k's travelled. It's always nice to buy a car with low k's, but low k's on a diesel could be a potential problem. If you're purchasing from a dealer then there should be some warranty, but if not I'd seriously consider having a professional mechanical inspection.

And at some point soon, I'll also be looking for a 2011-12 T31 TL, but auto. I took the opinion, if I'm going to spend the most money on a car I ever have, it was going to be "noice", so electric heated seats, HID headlights, and all the good gear on the TL, bugger the cost!
But I'm having trouble finding low KM's examples. 100,000-200,000kms for a 5-6 year old car is a LOT for me. I'll gladly pay the premium for a 50,000-70,000km model. The 2013 model Suzuki Swift I bought my partner had 19,000kms on it when we bought it. My 1997 Pathfinder had 58,000kms on it when I bought it in 2004.
But I am being distracted with a Jeep Renegade Trailhawk....has a "4 LOW" option the T31 doesn't, but it's not a 'true' low range. It just locks the torque converter and the auto into the lowest gearing. And they don't import the diesel into Aust (Arrgh!) 
Very interesting sitting the T30 next to it. The doors line up 'exactly', and the back is only 10cm cm shorter I'd say. Definitely an optical illusion that it looks a lot shorter in the back than the Exy, cause it's not when you put them side by side. Oh, and this was a "street" version, not the 'Trailhawk' off-road version. (Just look at that front approach angle / clearance, Errg!) 
Err, sorry for the 'hi-jack'...didn't mean to, just 'discussing' options to a T31 TL, which I am looking at, in case anyone was interested.
