Tactics for driving on corrugations

Hi All, I was curious to know what peoples thoughts on tactics of driving over corrugations.

For me personally, if it's a straight and even section with regular corrugations, I up the speed until the vehicle sort-of glides over the valleys. Makes the ride far more comfortable (less wear?) at the cost of reduced traction and as a result, far less control.
Close to the corners, I reduce the speed until more control is gained (unless I want to go around the corner sideways!). I rarely mess with tire pressure unless the corrugations are deep/uneven/rocky.

What are your habits of driving on corrugated roads? Is there a 'best practice'? Any stories of accidents/what not to do?

Cheers!

Re:

For me, I drop tyre pressures. Whenever I'm going for an off road trek I carry tyre deflators set to 28psi and a pump to bring them back up afterwards.

My preference is not to float over the top of corrugations any more, simply due to the lack of contact with the road.

What you're talking about is 'practice'.... which should be banned as a performance enhancer!

It's not just about traction when cornering, what happens if a roo jumps out infront of you ?
No braking or steering and the ABS doesn't work well on dirt.

Definitely lower the pressures for a softer ride and keep the speed reasonable.

Re: Tactics for driving on corrugations

After living in the Kimberley for almost 4 years and doing extensive outback work in my xtrail i would have to say, always lower your tyre pressure and don't drive too fast. Helped many a person with collapsed suspension from driving too fast with high pressures. That being said I never had a flat tyre either emoticon

Re:

I have a mate who is a road engineer.
Dirt roads get corragations when suspension in vehicles is struggling for grip and the accelerator is applied making the wheels bounce, so by adding more accelerator you are adding to the problem. - Vadermort.

The solution is to try and change the angle to everyone else and drive across them where possible at a different angle, but this is not possible on some corners etc, so slow down and just suck it up and be glad your not at work.

Wow, I only run 26-28psi on the road and after trying 18psi, now have settled on 16psi for most off-road/rough surfaces. I have 215/70/16 BFG KM2's on my T30.
