Re: Sydney to Central Australia and back

Was there anywhere you went where you think a petrol version might not be able to go that the diesel did with the extra torque (except maybe for Big Red emoticon )

How was the run from Birdsville to Big Red?

I'm heading out to Birdsville next month and I'd like to take a run out there and have a look at the edge of the desert.

Re: Sydney to Central Australia and back

Nah Kev, it's all pretty flat out there. The 4wding we do in the Blue Mountains, Watagans etc is way more difficult than anything out there (in the dry anyway). There really isn't much in the way of steep climbs that would push a petrol too hard. Big Red would definitely be possible just maybe not the hardest line. Lack of wheel travel and the hole there will stop you before torque becomes an issue.

The road out to Big Red is corrugated and rough but take your time and you will be fine. As for Big Red itself I ran the tyres at 12psi and that seemed about right. You could probably start a little higher than that but I only wanted to deflate tyres once.

Dogs loved it Pete. So many new and interesting smells plus the wide open spaces to run around.

Re: Sydney to Central Australia and back

Brings back some great memories.

Pity you didn't get to do the loop through the East McDonnell's via Arltunga. I'm sure you would have really enjoyed it - maybe next time eh!

That climb up Kings Canyon is well worth the effort. How long did the walk take you?

Your report makes we want to head back out there tomorrow. Guess I'll have to settle for Nepal this year - heading off next week, but unfortunately won't be taking the Exy!

Re: Sydney to Central Australia and back

Kings Canyon walk took me 3 hours to cover the 6km. They say it should take around 4.5 hours but that would be a pretty slow pace. Other than the first km or so where it's a steep climb the rest is a pretty easy standard. I was by myself so only stopped when I wanted to which also helps I guess. I did the walk in my best hiking boots (thongs).

Just to give everyone a better idea of where the trip went

And just because I think it's cool how big our country is. Do the same trek in Europe and you cover a massive number of countries.
