Re: Plastic Front Guards - What have they given me?

I'm sure it won't be long and our entire vehicles will be made of plactic.

And there is no reason it shouldn't be. Some plastics these days are as strong as steel if not stronger.

DOM, then you won't have to worry about rust ever again. emoticon

Kind Regards

Hi Dom,

I agree with your comments about the plastic bumpers, but don't forget that these bumpers are steel re-enforced, unlike the plastic fenders we have in our exy.

This is what causing them to shatter to pieces in extreme cold weather conditions.

The funny thing is that countries like Russia and Canada for example seem to have stocked-up pretty well on these particular parts and their prices have been reduced to a very affordable level due to the continues demand.

You're also right in saying that the prices of these plastic parts will be more affordable to the general public and will make the smash repair guys very happy as well to do a straight swap job, instead of sitting there and trying to straighten the damn thing back.

So, it looks like the concern would shift from worrying about the car getting rusted to have it prevented from being melted emoticon LOL

Re: Plastic Front Guards - What have they given me?

Hi Guys,

Sorry to bump-up this old thread, but what happened to me this morning and made me piss myself laughing made me also remember this thread LOL emoticon

Driving to work this morning it was raining a bit and I was testing my intermittent wiper control which I have installed recently and it was working fine, then I noticed this line across the windscreen and think "where the hell this come from??" I then look at the middle of the windscreen and see something that looks like a crack of some sort with bits of dirt in it and the wiper seems to be dragging that dirt across the windscreen.

That was the start of my journey in the morning and all the way to work I kept looking at that damn crack or whatever it was emoticon

As soon as I get to work and find a spot to park on the street (very lucky to find one) I decided to check the windscreen for the damage.

I couldn't reach that spot from the side of the car (standing near the front fender) I then leaned on the fender (completely forgetting it was plastic) to reach that thing and all of a sudden the whole fender gets pushed in inside, hehehehe

I freaked-out big time and thought, that's it, one fender gone!

I was actually still leaning on it when I tried to see the damage and I was amazed how far it can be pushed in without breaking emoticon

As soon as I stepped away, it just made the popping sound and out it came into shape. hahahaha

I thanked heavens for this plastic fender LOL

Aah and that damn spot on the windscreen wasn't a crack at all, it was some sort of glue stuck to the window and making a mess emoticon

Just thought I'd share this incident with you.

I'd be happy if there were more plastic panels. They can't rust, they can accept reasonable pressure without permanently deforming, they weigh less ... and, as I don't live in Canada or Russia (or even Canberra!) I'm pretty safe from the ice effect.

I'd be happy with that too Rob, but not in a family type of car and especially not in a 4WD where safety factor is a MUST.

Can you imagine a 4WD rolling over in an off-road situation with plastic panels all over? emoticon

The safety barrier on the front end of the exy is the engine! ALL of the smashed xtrails I have seen at the wreckers which have been through a front end collision had the 2 front fenders missing completely!

I think they are made from a polycarbonate construction. The renault Scenic RX4 is nearly all plastic.

And I believe the new Honda Civic has a bootlid and other panels made of similar construction.

The certainly looked plastic to me when I drilled through them to install the fender mirror emoticon

Nissan N.Z. x-trail spec also confirms this HERE

Re:

Hi Mate,

They're genuine Nissan and I imported the left side from Japan and the right side from Hong Kong I believe. Just used the standard plastic drill bit to drill the fenders.

Sorry I don't have the part numbers, as it's been ages ago.
