Re: Head gasket blown

seems I too have joined the BHG club at 204,000 Km. found it interesting to read a previous comment about the block needing to be machined.
I asked about just replacing the gasket but my mechanic said they send all heads out to be at least checked and machined if needed and almost 100% needed it as the gaskets are so thin.

I repost below comments made in the hard to start posts

update on starting problem. car finally gave up completely unable to start, replaced cam, crank sensors still the same. towed to mechanics, coolant in 3 cylinders and oil trace in one.
spark plugs (platinum) corroded.changed plugs started instantly.
Compression test ok. coolant pressure test (cold) ok.

seems it may be head or head gasket under heated conditions.
motor has done 204,000 kms purrs like a kitten when running.

not sure to replace head or complete motor at this stage.

comments welcome
.,

If the compression test is ok, id start with the head rebuild. Always use genuine nissan coolant as well! Sky is the limit to how much you replace but a water pump is cheap insurance too

Re:

Another quick note guys! You can diy the block facing as well. Only if you had an extereme overheating symptom and the head wont sit flat. This technique isnt as good as pulling the block obviously!

Once the head is removed, tape up the top of the cylinders very well.
Wrap some 800/1000 then 2000 grit wet n dry paper and wrap it around a solid/heavy straight edge and carefully flatten the surface, you can use some Blue dye or some carbon dust to identify where your high spots are!
Work clean and carefully!
Flush everything afterwards!

Re: Head gasket blown

Bad luck for me..need help from experts like you guys on what solution should I take.
After 1 month owned this xtrail from a seller in gumtree, I experienced the engine hesitate, feel jerk and lack of power. Sometime it hesitate during idle mode as well. Call up a mobile mechanic to do an oil change and ask him to change spark plug for me as I just guess that missfire matter come from a bad spark plug. He found a copper like substance in my radiator cap and some milky substance on the base of my motor oil cap. He said the missfire that I experienced is coming from a leaking cooling system and blown head gasket..really make me a bit dissaponited as I know this problems could make my wallet leaking also. However me & my wife love this xtrail as this is our 1st car in Australia. Can anybody expert in xtrail here suggest me the best solution whether to fix this faulty engine or get a reconditioned one..

Thank you

Re: Head gasket blown

Ismail.

Sorry to hear about your problem.

Someone may have a knowledge of the average cost for a reconditioned engine fitted but I guess you would need to have a basic quote from a reputable mechanic for the cost of replacing the head gasket in your current engine (hopefully nothing else seriously wrong) and then compare that cost against purchasing another engine and have it fitted. As I have not had a head gasket problem I haven't read the posts relating to this issue so there may be info in this or other posts that would guide you.

Otherwise you may have to wait for some more knowlegeable member than me to respond to you in due course.

I do wish you luck with having your exy back on the road without problems.

Re: Head gasket blown

Hi Bazuka I went down the same path as you last November. Blown head gasket. I asked around different mechanics for quotes, all were much the same.

option 1 buy motor from wrecker $2000 - 2500 165,000Km or higher for less km
option 2 buy recon motor $5000 -7000
option 3 head gasket replacement $3500

I went with option 3 because I knew and trusted my mechanic and he had done a lot of work on nissans. Also I knew that the rest of the engine was in good condition.

for that I got recon head, gasket, new head bolts, sump removed and cleaned, radiator unblocked, new fan belt, oil change etc.

Things to be wary of, a good mechanic should check this as they do the job.

1 the head should be reconditioned or at least resurfaced
2 block checked for warping or pitting
2 radiator checked and cleaned or in some cases replaced
3 waterpump checked or replaced

the best option if you have the time and money and storage would be to buy a motor from a wrecker get it fitted keep the old engine and get it reconditioned at your leisure.

Re: Head gasket blown

Hi X-Trailies

I am joining the Blown Head Gasket club. My 2007 T31 manual petrol X-trail now has 250k km on the clock. The head gasket blew last week whilst towing a caravan in 40 degree heat. My plan is to upgrade the cooling system when I replace the head gasket because I suspect that the standard cooling system is not up to the task.

I am not sure if the blown head gasket created the cooling problem or a cooling system problem caused the head gasket to blow or the X-trail just may not be up to the task in a Perth summer? It has never leaked any coolant or run above half on the gauge for the last 100k km that I have owned it. I would welcome any comments if you think that I am going overboard with a new 3 row radiator.

My parts list so far is:
Gates 05-2200 upper hose
Gates 05-2201 lower hose
Tora water pump
Worley 3 row aluminium radiator
Elring VRS head gasket set 588.640
gasket goo for timing cover
50/50 coolant

Is there anything else that I should be replacing whilst I have the engine apart? Or any other parts I need to order before starting the job.

Sirkev

Re: Head gasket blown

Hi Kev,

Check that both of your fans are good and that they both run, especially the high speed of the main fan. If something is not right, it could have been the cause of your overheating. I had a slight overheating problem when 4WDing once and again in stop-start traffic on a 40+ day and later found one of my fans was not working.

Hi Kev.
The three row radiator will be on my list when my standard one starts leaking. Thermostats and Serpentine belt could be on your list as well.

Re: Head gasket blown

Thanks for the reply guys.

It was too hot yesterday (42 degrees) to do a compression test, but I did check the thermofans and they are only coming on when the AC is on. I will borrow a multimeter and check the temperature sensor and relay on Monday.

I have already ordered thermostats waterpump and hoses. The rest will await my other checks.

I had thought that some forum members might suggest timings chains? I checked this forum when I joined in 2015 and remember that the chain was supposed to last the life of the engine. I have always been concerned that it is not on the maintenacne schedule.
