Re: Head gasket blown
seems I too have joined the BHG club at 204,000 Km. found it interesting to read a previous comment about the block needing to be machined.
I asked about just replacing the gasket but my mechanic said they send all heads out to be at least checked and machined if needed and almost 100% needed it as the gaskets are so thin.
I repost below comments made in the hard to start posts
update on starting problem. car finally gave up completely unable to start, replaced cam, crank sensors still the same. towed to mechanics, coolant in 3 cylinders and oil trace in one.
spark plugs (platinum) corroded.changed plugs started instantly.
Compression test ok. coolant pressure test (cold) ok.
seems it may be head or head gasket under heated conditions.
motor has done 204,000 kms purrs like a kitten when running.
not sure to replace head or complete motor at this stage.
comments welcome

Re: Head gasket blown
Hi Bazuka I went down the same path as you last November. Blown head gasket. I asked around different mechanics for quotes, all were much the same.
option 1 buy motor from wrecker $2000 - 2500 165,000Km or higher for less km
option 2 buy recon motor $5000 -7000
option 3 head gasket replacement $3500
I went with option 3 because I knew and trusted my mechanic and he had done a lot of work on nissans. Also I knew that the rest of the engine was in good condition.
for that I got recon head, gasket, new head bolts, sump removed and cleaned, radiator unblocked, new fan belt, oil change etc.
Things to be wary of, a good mechanic should check this as they do the job.
1 the head should be reconditioned or at least resurfaced
2 block checked for warping or pitting
2 radiator checked and cleaned or in some cases replaced
3 waterpump checked or replaced
the best option if you have the time and money and storage would be to buy a motor from a wrecker get it fitted keep the old engine and get it reconditioned at your leisure.

Re: Head gasket blown
Hi Kev,
Check that both of your fans are good and that they both run, especially the high speed of the main fan. If something is not right, it could have been the cause of your overheating. I had a slight overheating problem when 4WDing once and again in stop-start traffic on a 40+ day and later found one of my fans was not working.
