Re: Led light bar

Hi,
I've fitted a light bar on the nudge bar, with a relay through a switch on the dash, getting the signal from the high beam wire behind the LHS headlight. Works great. However now when I use the light bar, some radio stations have a lot of static on them, to the point where I have to go to a stronger signal station or use cd's or aux. Small problem I know, but if anyone has had this problem and rectified it, I'd like to know how it was fixed.
Thanks.

Re: Led light bar

It is a side-effect of how the light bar powers the LEDs.
Most light bars use a pulse-width-modulator to drive the LEDs with higher voltage pulses to get the maximum light output but allow time for the LED to cool between pulses, usually at on/off frequencies higher than the human eye can detect.
This high frequency on/off switching is what causes the interference on your radio if there is no radio-frequency interference suppression built-in to the light bar.

Get a clip-on RFI choke from an electronics store such as Jaycar and clip it around the power cable to the light bar as close as you can to the light.

Re: Led light bar

Hi,
I've put the RFI choke on, and although its better, it's still very noticeable. I've tried putting extra chokes on but that made no improvement. Is there anything else I can try?
Thanks.

Re: Led light bar

One other thing to try is an in-line noise suppressor for the power supply to the radio or lightbar. That would stop any power supply radio interference being transmitted through the cabling.

Also check with a multimeter that the body of the lightbar is earthed properly and run an extra earthing wire to the vehicle body if not.

Re: Led light bar

Thanks Kev.
I'll check the earth first, then fit the suppressor for the light bar, then if needed the one for the radio. I may need to know which wire is the power for the radio, but I'll do these first.

Thanks again. emoticon

Re: Led light bar

Ok i know im new here but i was searching info on led light leagallity and legal positioning of the lights and found this link https://www.google.com.au/url?sa=t&source=web&rct=j&url=http://www.tmr.qld.gov.au/~/media/Safety/Vehicle%2520standards%2520and%2520modifications/Vehicle%2520standards/Vehicle%2520standards%2520instructions/L152Drivinglampsv3.pdf&ved=0ahUKEwic-uLN7pDOAhVFLpQKHdy7BUkQFggaMAA&usg=AFQjCNFStpfyc6cbQ9YZtjh-j0ce7nL5-w&sig2=IXranKczgZdDk7rgqR4Xow
