Hitch mount motorcycle carriers on T31's

Hi all it's been ages since I was here but I've a question for the gurus out there. I'm running a T31 diesel auto with a 2" hitch and have recently purchased a Honda CRF250. I had a search through the forum but didn't find anything but if I missed something, sorry for the re-post.

I don't have room for a trailer (must admit I didn't really think it through when I bought the bike) so I'm looking at hitch mount carriers. I have found plenty out there but I'm curious to know if any one has used them on an exy and what their thoughts are?

I'm curious as to how the car handles with an extra 150ish kilo's (bike 108+carrier 42???) way back there past the back wheels and any other input would be great particularly if you have one that rocks.

Thanks heaps for any input

What's the max ball weight for the T31 ?
150kg sounds like it's getting close.

That much weight would surely need some extra help in the back springs like airbags I am guessing to help level-out the Xtrail

Re: Hitch mount motorcycle carriers on T31's

I thought of three things here;
- the first two have been correctly pointed-out by Kev. The down-weight on the tow ball is a maximum allowable of 150kg.
- the back of the car will definitely 'drop' under the weight overhanging the rear end, affecting the steering and hence, control of the car, and
- the length of the motorbike. Is it going to be too wide to sit safely across the back of the Exy, ie, will you have overhang on both sides?

Re: Hitch mount motorcycle carriers on T31's

Hi gents thanks for the replies.

Kev, I've got an aftermarket Aranda 2" hitch with the ball removed. The hitch mount bike carrier fits into the 2" "receiver". The towbar has 200kg ball weight so I've got a little up my sleeve. I've also researched a few carriers and their weights are more in the range of 25kg which gives me a better margin. Bike + carrier will be around 133kgs. I am not sure but I think that with the ball removed entirely and the carrier inserted into the mount I've actually got up to 400kgs but I'm checking with Aranda. I'm definitely looking into beefing up the back end.

BP yes there will be overhang on both ends. The Exy is 1.8m wide and the overall length of the bike is 2.2m so an over hang of 20cm each side. Interestingly my mountain bike overhangs almost as much so I'm not overly concerned.

Obviously the weight of the bike and the carrier is less than a couple of fatties in the back seat but given that it will be way back behind the rear wheel it will affect handling as you rightly point out. I'm not sure how it's going to handle or if it's even a goer at this point so I'm hoping someone here has paved the way.

Thanks for the replies so far team.

Cheers Scott.

Hi Scott,

The Aranda towbar might have a maximum ball weight of 200kg but is that a recommended weight for the Xtrail mounting points ? Check with the manufacturer and also check your Xtrail user manual to make sure they match.

While the towbar itself might handle the 200kg, the Xtrail itself might only do 150kg because of the issue with suspension, steering and stability as BP pointed out.

Go with the user manual maximum unless you get the added airbags or something else for the rear suspension.

Ok I hadn't thought of that. Just figured the ball weight was what mattered. I'll check it out thanks for the advice Kev.

Cheers Scott.

Just checked the owners manual, max vertical load on the hitch assembly is 100kg so I'm buggered.

All good mate, but with all due respect, on the photo you've attached I can't see your licence plate, reversing lights, or reflectors.
All bookable offences - anywhere in Oz.

Had police cars right behind me on the road and never had an issue

And to be honest, thats not the point in the question that was asked so why bother talking about it.
