Re: Driving Lights

Can I ask what size your spotties are? I'm looking at some 7" but I'm not sure if they'll fit in the bar.

6.5" across, with 0.5" off the bar.

7" should fit (with room to spare) but I wouldn't go any bigger. (with the 0.5" off the bar)

It's holiday time! - well in July at least it will start

Starting around July 12, I shall wander off into the western sunset from Rockhampton towards Three-Ways, then north rather slowly to see the Northern Territory by day and shiver by night.

I am going to try my best at getting a full run at the Gibb River Rd and as many stops along it as I can make, otherwise I will be taking the not so scenic route by the highway. And I will just need to return in the future in something with low range and a snorkel and maybe a passenger.

Then its a bit of a rest stop in Broome for a few days before I head the coastal way south to see as much as I can get to and hopefully go across the Nullarbor Plain and back onto home.

I have 12 weeks to get somewhere random and then 2 weeks to get myself back home before I need to return to work.

Only a few more things left to buy: Replace my aging Waeco 50LDZ (before the thermostat goes on it) and the old Garmin GPS before it stops completely. If I can maybe find a decent dash cam to do a little recording as I travel I will try to do it.

Now all I really need is to find who I can take my soon to be over GVM exy to for its 80K service most likely either Darwin area or Broome area. Anyone have any recommendations?

I'm happy to meet up with people along the way and my schedule will be very open as to when I will be places.

If I don't leave Broome until week 8, then I will just miss out on Perth and the southwest corner until next time. I'm not to worried if I don't make it past Broome, but I would really like to make it across the Nullabor Plain. As those are my 2 highlights on this road trip (the Gibb River Road and the Nullarbor Plain), everything else I can fly to and hire a car and see.

I'll stick some photos up when I get a few more things onto the exy.
But it has a few addons now halfway onto red.

Roof platform
The awning is back on again
A Tyre Trek
Light bar instead of the old spot lights
The alloys off the first exy
New 160W solar panel and an optima battery as the spare and power for everything that isn't hard wired.
New radios, since I now have my amateur licence but not the spare coin/time to put towards a HF radio, however I have a VHF at least to sit beside the UHF (call sign VK4QV).

Re: Scareyann's new Red exy.

Hi Scarey,

Although it's a while ago now, on my trip to Broome in 2011 I used Kununurra (mil issue) & Broome Nissan (service) & found both of them to be very helpful. At the time the exy was salary sacrificed so can't help with costs.

Re:

Any of the caravan parks or motels in Kal are fine. Just lock anything valuable up. Use Wikicamp app for bush campsites too. Fantastic app. Got a mate doing the Gibb River. Will ask him about the conditions when he gets back. Last I heard the road is really easy. Karijini is a must. There are pastoral stations around the Shark Bay area and along the coast that also provide accommodation. Have a look at them. Farmstay website is useful but it doesn't have all the stations though. Hamelin Station 100km from Denham is a nice little station to stay at. Facilities are really good.

Get a parks pass from the Department of Parks and Wildlife to save some money if you intend to visit a few national parks. I got a Blackvue dashcam which I've been using to plot and record my trips. Get Kingston microSD cards off ebay. The Sandisk ones are crap.

If you are driving from Broome, bypass Port Hedland, go to Karijini, not sure if need permit to travel on the Great Northern Hwy through aboriginal communities, then back up to Roebourne if you want to. Travel the Ningaloo coast to the SW region. On the way you can drop by Exmouth, Ningaloo Reef, the Pinnacles and Shark Bay/Francois Peron National Park. You'll go through Perth to get to the SW. The caves at Margaret River are a must at least once, south to Walpole then east to Albany. The Stirling Ranges is absolutely beautiful and Bluff Knoll is the only place in WA that has snow. From Albany go north to Hyden, to Yellowdine via Emu Fence Hill or to Merredin then Kalgoorlie or do the Holland Track from Hyden to Coolgardie if it's dry. From Kalgoorlie, go north on the bitumen to Menzies and Lake Ballard and take the dirt road from Kookynie back to Kalgoorlie. From Kal go to Esperance and visit the beaches. From Esperance go east on Fisheries Rd then take Parmango Rd which will join up with Balladonia Rd to Balladonia. From Balladonia go east on the Eyre Hwy. You'll see most of WA that way I think.

Re:

Thanks guys, very helpful information.
My exy is still salary sacrificed but out of warranty, so I can go to a few different places for the big service. I'm hoping to make it to Broome at least for the service.

I've got a few maps that I'll be highlighting the things and places to see as a rough plan. But its much easier when someone local says which way is best to travel to see the most without too much back tracking.

I will definitely be getting a parks pass for WA and NT.
There are a couple of dash cams i'm looking at, but i'll see if i can get any at a good price in the June caravan show in Brisbane soon.
