Front Suspension Rubber Boot

Hi guys (and gals, or course!)

I have just acquired a 2005 T30. There is a squeak in the front left, so off came the wheel. Brake pads are almost non-existent, so I am assuming that this is the problem. In the process, I discovered that the protective rubber boot (service manual describes it as a bound bumper) on the suspension is deteriorated severely, and needs replacing. Is this necessary, or cosmetic, and how hard is it to replace?

Cheers, and thanks

Re: Front Suspension Rubber Boot

Hi Kev. Yep, that's the one. I have no idea how long it has been broken, but the internal strut post is still nice and shiny. Question really is, how hard is it to remove and dismantle the entire suspension strut? And how important is it to do before heading off on a bit of a trip (bitumen only, no water crossings!)?

Re: Front Suspension Rubber Boot

It is mainly there to protect the strut post and top seal from the crud of mud, dust and salt water from damaging the surface.
A road run should be fine as it is.

Replacement is not as easy as you would like due to having to drop the strut and remove the top tap. This also means the spring will be uncompressed.
There might be 3rd party replacements which can be "wrapped around" and taped without removal of the strut but I have not tried to find them or used them.

I replaced mine when I changed the struts for new ones.
