Intermittant engine rattle
It seems that our xtrail has developed an intermittent engine rattle when under load, it's not a heavy sounding bearing noise and performance seems normal. I'm thinking it maybe ignition timing related as it has the sound of engine pinging. Crankshaft and cam sensors changed 30k ago and no dash lights come on. Any ideas would be great.

Re: Intermittant engine rattle
Hi Johnsey and Jeff,
You both have older Xtrails. How many kms have you done ?
I suggest you should be using 5W40 instead of the 5W30 oil as this helps older engines keep oil pressure vital for the timing chain tensioner to work correctly.

Re: Intermittant engine rattle
Hi Kev,
Were at 178k on the clock and iv'e been using Penrite full synthetic 5w-40 for the last 50k, well before this noise was noticeable. Will get mechanic to have a listen at next service.

Re: Intermittant engine rattle
Hi Johnsey,
If it sounds like engine pinging, have you cleaned your MAF sensor and replaced your O2 sensor ?

No, think it's time it should be done.

Re: Intermittant engine rattle
Spoke today with mechanic about possible engine pinging and he told me to use 95 or 98 unleaded to see if it improves, ran 98 and seems to eliminate noise. Will get a check over when next service in a few weeks.

Re: Intermittant engine rattle
If running 98 removes the noise then your engine is running lean on standard fuel.
Causes of this could be
- low fuel delivery from blocked injectors, blocked fuel filter, faulty fuel pump
- incorrect air/fuel mixture caused by faulty O2 sensor, faulty MAF.
First off suggestion would be to have your MAF cleaned and your O2 sensor replaced.
It would also be prudent to have your injectors serviced, not just cleaned, as the little filter baskets in them could be blocked.
These should make sure the correct air/fuel mix is being calculated and delivered by the ECU.
At 178k have you had your fuel filter replaced ?
