Re:
Hi Steve,
This mod should work for your xtrail with no problems, so check the previous pages for the instructions on how to do it. It's a simple mod.
As to your other question, this has nothing to do with this thread, so you should wait for an answer in the head unit thread where you asked this question previously, as I can't help you with it.

Re:
Must be something a miss as previous owners of a 2013 model reported success and I doubt Nissan changed anything in terms of wiring in the T31 model Series 4 and 5 to make it any different.

Re: How to light up the steering controls & gear selector (T31 X-Trail)
Just wanted to let everyone know that people are still using this awesome mod! I have read through all 26 pages (yes took a while), but definitely worth the read.
So far I've only done the steering lights for the Exy, but am planning on doing the gear selector as well once I find the parts. Going to start looking at the local wreckers next week.
A huge thanks to s970022 for their original post, jal for all of the updates and tips and tricks (So many pages), John for the idea to use the ESC switch (Page 3) and Andrew (SofiesDad) for the great write up on a great way to connect the wire to the steering light socket (Page 23).
So as you can see I used bits and pieces from all parts of the forum. Using s970022 original post as the overall steps, with Andrew's great way to connect the wire firmly to the steeriing light socket. I didn't like the idea of having the lights always on, so instead of using the ignition cable (Pink wire from OP) I used the red wire attached to the ESC switch (above the fuse box) described by John.
Only thing I did differently was how I connected to the red wire on the ESC switch, instead of directly splicing into the wire I used a Wire Tap that I found in a box of terminal connectors from Supercheap Auto, these:
http://www.supercheapauto.com.au/online-store/products/SCA-Electrical-Terminals-Wire-Tap-Connector-3-4mm-6-Pack.aspx?pid=120046#Recommendations
Seemed to work really well, just had to cut back the plastic insulation around the group of wires to get some more room to put the wire tap in, you may be able to get a smaller one.
Once I get the parts for the gear selector mod will definitely let you know how I go. Popped the base off and looks pretty simple, will just need to find the right wire to tap/splice into.
Thanks for everyone's tips that have gone before me!
