Re: T31 Additional power outlet in dashboard storage box

Hi, I thought that this was a great mod so I carried it out but it annoyed me that the audio cable from my phone to the stereo was still messy so I tidied that up as well. The pics tell the story.

It's extra neat if you use a flat cable so that the door on the compartment under the stereo closes properly. Even neater if you use an angled plug to fit into the stereo.

Hope I haven't broken any rules using this site for the pics.

Wiring Mod

Cheers, Andy

Re: T31 Additional power outlet in dashboard storage box

Hi Guys,

Great thread. Thanks for all the tips - I used a bit of everything on Page 1.

I wanted to retain the factory look and avoid having to drill into anything. I went for a USB port in one of the blank switches near the fusebox. I've got a spare 12v socket hiding in the fusebox itself just in case emoticon

For anyone whos interested, I butchered a USB Female A to Male A extension cable to get the 'panel fit' look...

Re:

Just made it too and searching for a previous post found this topic.
Here is my version, on central console.
I took the electronics from a 12V-USB charger and I put the PCB inside a thermic mouled isolator.
I took the LED that light only when current is drawn from the USB as a charge indicator.
Unfortunately, the dumb button is made from some sort of poliester and is very hard to finish it without little scars...

Re: T31 Additional power outlet in dashboard storage box

And here is my version.
I put two plugs. One is a cigarette lighter plug and the second is a 20 Amp quick connect accessory plug used on my radio equipments (from marine appliances).
I put the screws on the plug after placing back the glove box due to the limited space under the dash; it cannot be replaced with the plug installed.

Re: T31 Additional power outlet in dashboard storage box

Hey guys,

Just looking at the process as described by Jalal, the only thought I had about the mounting of the plug into the box, rather than just sitting it on the end of it's supply cable is if you (or someone, inadvertently dropped something in the box which was metal. Provides a short cut to a short circuit I was thinking, unless you use the connector with the fitted lid on it. Got one from SCA the other day for about $20.

Re: T31 Additional power outlet in dashboard storage box

Bit of an old thread but I appreciated the info in here! I did this mod recently and its been great for trips with the family. My regular socket was shorting out so I've replaced it at the same time with a dual usb plug. For the wiring I left the stock plug and just tapped into it with some blade terminals. The easiest way to know which wire is which is: the pole on the 12v plug is positive, look at the 12v socket and it will be very obvious.

I also found it easiest to screw down the mounting block by separating the lid from the dash box, this requires taking out some screws and springs. Was pretty straight forward.
