Re: Re:
Michael, I haven't been on the forum in a while so only just noticed this entry. Did you have to replace your engine?
If so I'm terribly surprised, particularly since yours isn't all that old.
My TL has just been through it's 90,000km service and got a clean bill of health. Hope she stays that way.
Lease runs up in a year's time and I'm still debating whether to get rid of her or hang on to her until I leave Darwin.

Re: Average M9R lifespan?, what are Aust drivers getting? Reco engine costs?
Yep the M9R is a crazy engine to get repaired cost wise, so ya look after it!
Always run quality fuel, NEVER el cheapo "TRUCK MUCK" I always use Caltex Vortex premium diesel. Even if I have to go out of my way to find it!
I always use a diesel fuel conditioner too, at double the recommended dose.
Cheap insurance for the fuel system, helps maintain a good clean engine, vital in diesels!
Improves the fuel economy beyond the extra $$$ cost per tankful! So win win!
I use an engine oil flush at every service! Yeah sure $30, but money well spent, you just have to look at the colour of the oil after a 1000 km's to see that!
Also the 10,000 km service interval is way too long! Even with modern oils and additives 8,000 km's is a better time to do it. Sure the servicing costs more, but price that engine rebuild and this is bloody cheap insurance to making sure you get a long living engine!
Also look at it this way, if you do run into a major issue under warranty, are they going to hassle you on a claim if you have serviced it more often than the recommended intervals!
I use Lucas engine oil stabilizer after 1000 km, around 100mls worth and add another 100mls worth at around 5000 km.
The oil spec on this engine is too bloody light! Especially for cold winters. I was advised by the Lead Mechanic/workshop foreman at Ferntree Gully Nissan to do this. It doesn't void the warranty!
Remember they want it to wear out! Not instantly, but they don't want it getting super high mileage!
I dropped all oils at the 1,000 km first service. Running a brand new engine for 10,000 km before changing the run in oils is stupid!
If you have kept it clean buy using the chemical additives mentioned above, at 50,000 km and definitely NO EARLIER, I'd run a dose of Slick 50 through it.
Yes there have been some horror stories of short lived M9Rs. Personally I'd love to know how those owners got that engine to quit under 100,000 km's! I'd say they actually drove them like granddads! Never got them up in the rev range and never got the combustion temps up high enough. This is a high revving high performance diesel engine, treat it as such.
Also never ever allow it to sit warming up for 5 minutes or more. You are not doing it any favours at all! 2 minutes absolute MAX, or you will get engine varnish issues! Never let it wind down for too long either. Due to the variable vane turbo used it doesn't need the 2 minute wind down like traditional turbos! This rundown period was thought to save turbos, maybe it did save the turbo, but it allowed the rest of the engine to get clagged up with varnish, clogged the EGR valve etc. etc.
These engines need to be run hot! Or you will shorten their lifespan!
Treated right and serviced correctly, run decent fuel and use additives, for cheap preventative maintenance, I'd expect well over 500,000 km's before any work beyond servicing schedule work has to be done!
Renault claim a very conservative 300,000 km's using scheduled servicing, and not using additives, so getting well above this should be easy.
For real peace of mind and to really get the most out of this engine and to keep the fresh edge on it, I'll be doing the rings only at 250,000 km's. No need to do bearings, in fact replacing the bearings unless there are serious wear issues, can actually lead to shorter engine life in modern diesels.
The rings are all that is needed to be done! I'd probably get the Turbo serviced at this time too, with a complete seal kit, just to be on the safe side!
I'm looking forward to a very long life out of the M9R. I do intend to crack the million mark with both of them!
And yep it ain't no tractor engine. Give it s*** or it will crap itself early! Drive it like ya stole it!

Yeah. me too. Bottom end bearings are nearly always oil pressure or oil 'something' related.
Any turbo engine, I do 5,000kms oil AND filter changes. Don't worry about using a fancy oil, just a cheap oil and change it often.
I've also heard similar stories about Subaru Boxer diesels with manual transmissions which users are changing gear "too early" and not revving them above 2200 RPM. They seem to have lots of problems caused by not enough right foot action. Blocked DPF's, glazed cylinders, starts using oil, blowing smoke. Various sensor warnings going off.

Re: Average M9R lifespan?, what are Aust drivers getting? Reco engine costs?
Time for a thread refresh?!
Ours has done 242K, and has cost us only tyres, and a replacement intercooler hose (DieselCare Toowoomba).
Zero oil consumption. Used Penrite enviro since new. Penrite all round for the other fluids. Everything changed per specs, virtually all by us. K&N air filter. Like most others here, zero change in fuel usage.
Used to be an exercise in reliability, until recently when dearest wife accidentally filled her up with unleaded. PREMIUM unleaded if you please!! Didn't realise. Drove it until it stopped (about 5Km including highway!). Flushed the system, changed filters, but every now and then she still gives a bit of a cough.
It's probably the beginning of the end for the poor old girl … but it's hardly its fault. Difficult vehicle to fault in our application, and we wouldn't have changed a thing …
apart from that unfortunate fuelling thing perhaps!!
